Two differencs iv noticed between the two, first is that the athlon x2 has 2.9ghz and the phenom x3 has 2.3, and the athlon x2 is am3 socket, but the phenom x3 is a am2+
hmm

The Phenom X3 is better for multi-threaded apps. Now the Phenom II X3 that's where you should be looking. Fast chips and a great deal.

Phenom II X3 > Phenom X3 > Athlon X2

When in doubt, go for more cores over clock speed. Unless you're using a single threaded application very frequently that won't suitably run on one weaker core and has no potential to be updated to be multi-threaded. Most apps are multi-threaded these days, and only more are going to show up. I wouldn't go for a dual-core build these days unless its a very budget, surfing/music type machine.

I would rather have a Athlon II X2 or a Phenom II X2 then a Phenom I X3, unless its the Phenom I X3 8750BE.

yup, if you compared the athlon 2 vs the original x3 phenom i would go for the new althons, mainly because of overclockablity, those old phenoms suckd at overclocking, the B.E.'s were decent tho:)

Stranglehold: Yah, those 8750 BE are pretty sweet chips.

Also note if you buy the Phenom II X3 they will be much faster then the older X2 or X3 chips.

You can always overclock to 3.0ghz or so to boot....my buddy runs a Phenom II X3 and is running 3.2ghz. He even got so lucky as a extra core so he got a quad-core (not 100% it was just pure luck it had a locked 4th core)
