just having a discussion with a friend and i made the point that i believe the celeron will be obselete soon, i.e. intel will discontinue production

With intel currently have a range comprising of Pentium D, pentium 4, Core 2 Duo and soon quad core etc, would they continue throwing out something like the celeron?

This discussion arose because another friend was after a laptop, he recommended one from dell for £349, it was a celeron M 1.6ghz with 256mb ram, 40gb HDD

I recommended one that was a HP latop, AMD sempron 3400 (1.8ghz) 512mb, 60gb HDD £399

am i right in thinking the AMD laptop would be a better buy?

No friend tells a friend to buy an AMD. :P

It would be the better buy just for the RAM alone if nothing else. Never mind a faster processor and a bigger HDD. It sucks that it's HP though. The other thing to keep in mind would be the sizes of the screens.

i advised the AMD laptop as it was just a much better spec than the dell offers around the same price

never fear i am no AMD fan boy, i'm in the process of sorting swapping out my athlon for Core 2 duo as we speak :)

i just cant understand the response from this guy, suggesting that AMD are hugely inferior to AMD due to reliability issues?

the two systems as follows:

far right at £349

thoughts?

i know this should probably be in the laptop section now but the initial question was related to the death of the celeron :)

Oh geez. No comparison. The HP even has a bigger screen. Besides, the Dell is ugly as hell.

I would steer him towards the AMD personally. It's a much better value for the price.
