I guess the rule of thumb is hold on to your passport! My French teacher told us to have two because the hotels will want to keep one when you check in. Although, my aunt that went to Germany said no such thing.

I'm doing another course abroad this semester and in class we watched the Rick Steves video on Germany. He said the exact same thing as your French teacher. Apparently American's don't like to give up their passport, and I don't blame anyone for that.
