im looking into the psp for my bday and im a little skeptical because its expensive. some better games are coming out and i dont wanna have to buy a memory stick cuase i dont already own one.

No way. Waste of $$$. Oooh, wow, it plays games, so do laptops. Ooooh, it plays DVD's, so do portable DVD players. Oooh, it plays music, so do Ipods. Biggest waste of money ever, you have better things to do with your loot.

If you want it primarily as an mp3 player, I suggest getting something else. A 1GB stick can cost almost $100 (USD). If you want it solely for the games, there are a list of portable gaming devices that are better. If you want it basically because it can play Movies, well, I would get a portable DVD player before I get a PSP...

But, if you all of those things together, your getting a pretty cool device that adequately does all three.... plus you can store photos, also has IEEE802.11b, guess you can play games with 15 other PSP's... anyway, its an awesome device... But make sure you have the money to supply it with what it needs (Games and movies and memory stick duo's all cost a lot of money.. you will need to buy a lot more than just the PSP hardware to keep from losing interest)

waste. i'd rather have a laptop. after the initial purchase, all the accessories, games, memory, i could probably afford a decent used laptop.

A laptop with a DVD Drive and iTunes. You can get one for $600 from Dell.

even cheaper, you could get a used IBM X23 for like $300 in pretty good condition. donig that stuff requires next to no speed/performance, and a laptop can do so much more lol.

i guess so but its bound for more problems and gonna be outdated faster

...more problems? the PSP is the one with the problems. did you know if it has 9 dead pixels on the screen you can't return it? you have to have 10 or more dead pixels. the first "generation" PSP's had very bad battery problems, althouhg not all of them.

a used laptop (if taken care of) can last you years, FAR longer than you will WANT to keep it lmao. and even if the thing is 5 years old, it will still do everythign a PSP can. my P3 laptop is "ancient" to me and it played DVD's, games, internet, mp3's, etc. it was only 866MHz

its still not comparable to the portability of the psp. I cant play games while im walking around my school and i cant listen to music on my laptop when im runnning on the treadmil. i cant slip my psp in my pocket before i go over to my friends house. the laptop might be a better moneys worth but the portablity doesnt compare.

lol, if you think mere portability is worth the price then go for it. but personally i'd turn on the radio when on the treadmill, or hook up speakers to the laptop. and school is no place to play games young man! hehe.

if the laptop isn't portable enough...then get a PDA. it's basically a laptop but smaller, and still does all the things the PSP can. there are a meriod of games for PDA's, and you can hook it up to a keyboard to play them if u want. they have windows media player, along with other media players, and they can also use internet, e-mail, etc. still much cheaper than the PSP.

I dont know what you guys have against the PSP, but I have one and I think it's great! You guys keep saying that he should get a laptop, but you can't fit a laptop in your pocket. Plus, the PSP has much more battery life than a $600 laptop would provide. I have a PSP, and it has no problems. No dead pixels, no bad buttons, nothing. And, I got mine while I was in Japan back in January, right when they came out. Mine still works perfectly fine, plus it has built in wifi, so if you have a wireless router or are at a hotspot, you can surf the net if you feel like it! Plus the support for new games will last for at least 4 years. Try playing just newly released games on a two or three year old laptop.

Anyway, if your looking for portability, a laptop just wont compare(try whipping out a laptop in school and not have your teachers notice :D )

Oh, I also have a PDA. And the games do NOT compare to PSP games. There are very little actual good games, and the graphics are not near up to the PSP graphics.

as said above, if you don't think the laptop is portable enough...try a PDA. it fits in your pocket, battery life is great, plays movies, mp3's, gamess, internet, etc.

game quality is a personal preference...if you can dish out hundreds of bucks then do it. but you are wasting your money on a toy lol.

well if he was planning on getting a PSP, I sure as hell hope he would be getting it for the games over the other features. In which case, game quality would definately matter.

The PSP comes with a memory stick, though it's only 32 mb. Plenty big for game saves, not so big for music and videos.

i wrote a whole schpeel, but erased it after realizing it was a huge confused annoying rant lmao.

it's a personal preference. at 14, long term money saving issues don't mean crap. so, if so inclined, buy a PSP.

for the psp.. its more of an "in the trend" thing... just cause everybody has it.. so doubtfully, you will want one also. i think its more than just it being portable and providing music, video, internet, games, and all those other stuff.. it most likely has to deal with whats in trend right now..

yes, you'll want to have a psp during ur jogging on a tread mill, listen to music on a "PSP", watch video on a "PSP" so others will be like.. "cool, this dude/gal has got a PSP, man i always wanted one".. so yes, you can listen to the portable 99 cent FM mini players, buy a portable DVD player, buy a portable mp3 player.. but you already know will happen..

"oh, its just a cheap FM player"
"just a dvd player, i have one at home"
"mp3 player? what.. all it does is play music"

so if your talking "specs" wise, yea there are stuff that can outperform the PSP, but if your talking about portability, all in one, "cool"ness.. theres really nothing that can compare to a PSP..

PDA have their goods, but to have a PDA that performs as well as a PSP in "gaming", you'll end up paying for it more than you would a PSP

EDIT: oops, forgot to vote. for me, if it was free, then yea.. but i wouldn't buy it cuz i dont have the need to have something portable with me besides a phone
