Is there a difference in ATI and NVidia image quality?

Hey there guys

I was just wondering, is there a difference in ATI and NVidia image quality? If you use intel or AMD?

Will there be a notcible difference in the picture quality between the 2?

well i always heard Nvidia has better image quality but i dont see why they would be better than ATI

The difference might be that some effects are implemented differently, hence slightly different results e.g. I've heard that fog/transparency on some ATI and Nvidia cards looks different. I doubt that the difference is significant, and even if it is the effects are probably equally realistic anyways and really, whether the quality is better or worse probably comes down to personal preference. And if you don't have any (like most of us don't), you just go for the best performing card for its price ;).

Also, the quality also depends on drivers. Sadly, most drivers are optimized to make the card look impressive on synthetic benchmarks, however I did read that the ATI has traded numbers of their new 4xxx cards in synthetic benchmarks for better real-world performance , so...

IMO, the image quality should be the last factor to consider, as it's very similar and probably equally good. I've never though there'd be any significant difference.

IQ is the result of the drivers, agreed. Nvidia has been known to cheat on their drivers to make their card look better in certain games, both synthetic and real world perf., Crysis being the foremost to come to mind.

Yeah, that the IQ isn't usually huge. Just a couple small things, volumetric effects like you mentioned or AA quality. Certainly not an end-all of consideration.

There are many people that have done personal comparisons, and all have said that ATI does have a better image quality. But its not that big of a difference, i think that mainly points to the 9600/8800 series. Not sure about the 9800s+..
