Is there a thread giving info about AM2/AM2+/AM3 compatibility?

Just trying to figure out what my future upgrade paths look like...

I currently have a AM2 CPU on a AM2/AM2+ board with a 790x chipset (not 790fx...still don't quite know the difference). Will I be able to upgrade to the upcoming AM3 Phenoms?

I'm sure there are threads about this issue, so I apologize. Any info would help, whether posted here or linked to another thread.
 
The AM3 CPUs will work on AM2+ motherboards, but they won't work on AM2 mobos. That's because AM3 CPUs require the split votage planes the AM2+ socket offers, in theory you can run it on an AM2 mobo but you may risk frying stuff and I doubt there are going to be any BIOS updates to allow 45nm Phenoms on AM2 boards.
 
The difference between the F and FX is the amount of PCIe lanes the Chipset supports. The FX can run C/F in 16+16
 
So basically, I'm just missing out on a couple of PCI-e slots and faster Crossfire support...but otherwise, everything that is compatible with the FX should be compatible with the plain X, right?

I'm feeling hopeful for the AM3s coming out!
 
Right, they are the same just less PCIe lanes. The 790X chipset is the same as the 790GX. The GX just has onboard video too. Like my 770 chipset is the same but only a single slot board.

I stand corrected. According to wikipedia, AM3 CPUs will work on AM2 as well as AM2+ boards.
