for assigning unallocated hdd space. and would partitioning for diff types of data be a bad idea? found 'simple volume' on 7, but for only 8mb. about 416gb unallocated.

thanks

Windows assigns a small amount in your case 8mb which you can't touch. There is no need to make separate partitions for different types of data. You can create folders in the partition for the different types if you want.

ok, yep, it reserved 100mb and i partitioned 50gb for os, etc. now i have to see how to format and assign a drive letter to the balance of the drive. right now its unallocated. there's no option to format the unallocated space when i right click. does this mean it already is? and if so, how do i assign a path letter to this potion of the drive. ive went thru windows help, and it didnt help. and ive search for th topic but only find thigs close to the siituation, and not exactly what im trying/needing to do. im sure its something simple that my feeble brain doesnt see, so hopfully someone will spell it out for me.

thanks

Go over to the right side where it says unallocated space in disk management and right click on that part of the drive, you should see a menu that says format or something like that. I don't have windows 7 so i'm just hoping that it has basically the same thing that XP has.

no, thats my trouble. read up and tried that 1st. the only option there that had a possibility was 'simple volume', and the max for that is 8mb. ive looked at ms.com, googled for other data or topics, and havnt found anything yet.
hmmm... ya know i have my old 60hdd with xp, and after booting from it, it has the new drive with the space assigned to a path letter.
could that have a bearing when i boot from from the actual drive w/7 on it?
