I'm not sure what area to post this.... but... a friend's mac hard drive was wiped because he had a magnet above it, (he never thought about it ).

He bought an external hard drive off me and he used that for time machine, but he doesn't do it often.

He wants to build like a file server, and whenever he connects to his home network, the file sever automatically backs up his hard drive / files.

Also can this be done on all of his computers??? Like their vista laptop and vista desktop.

I think it is possible, I can't remember how but you can always just put your stuff in a network HDD.

Buy an external HDD enclosure that supports networking (LAN)
Then buy a harddrive and stick it into the enclosure.
After that, you go and connect and do all the finishing touches and he can just upload it to the HDD and it can be accessed through any computer in his house.

Yeah, with the right settings and programs. There's also one touch backup external hard drives where you just click a physical button and the hard drive backs up w/e you have set for it to backup (folders, files, drives etc).

Yes. You can either back up your files via .mac account ( has a free back up disk ), or if he has Time Capsule ( which serves as both a external HD and a internet router ) you can connect to that and save your files. Both methods have worked for me. Hope that helps :-)

I use both a external disk and my router to back up. If he can buy a time capsule or buy airport extreme and plug a HD in there it will back up every hour remotely.
