Is there anything wrong with Hitachi drives?

I need an IDE drive - I can pick up a 160GB Deskstar drive for 40 bucks

OR

Seagate or WD drive for 50 bucks.

It's for a Backup / Storage PC that might get either little use or - might be a Linux server if I decide later to go that route.

For budgetary reasons I'd like to save the 10 bucks since it's not a daily user - but I've only used WD and Seagates in my past purchases for upgrades / builds. I don't know much of anything about Hitachi HDD's

Is it ok to go with a Hitachi ? Or would you stick with Seagate / WD. I'm quite budget conscious these days after building my i7. I'm trying to save to replace my depleted funds from the build and still need to get a TV tuner card to finish things off.
 
I'm using a Hitachi drive right now. It's not very stable and not responsive. There are worse drive makers out there. (Maxtor) I would recommend sticking with a WD or Seagate.
 
I've heard that the new Hitachi's are ok. I personally wouldn't buy one, I'd rather a WD myself. I have had Seagates and they are second best to WD IMO. Maxtors used to be great drives, then they went down hill. I have a Maxtor that is like 7 years old and still works flawlessly. Granted its only 120GB, but I use it to keep backups and it doesn't complain. Maxtor went down hill in the last few years and then Seagate bought em, and that was the end of Maxtor for me. Im not a big fan of seagates, but they work well when they do, and when they have a problem, they won't work AT ALL. There's no warning. So I'd go WD they at least for the most part give you some warning before they go.

Maxtor was bought out by Seagate over three years ago.

I would stay away from Hitachi. The best thing I can suggest is to go on Newegg and look at hard drives with few bad reviews.

Thats a good deal for IDE. $49 and 400GB Seagate.

It's also recertified with only a 90 day warranty. I think warranty is more important in hard drives than in any other piece of computer equipment because of their high failure rate, and recerified drives have a much higher failure rate.
 
I'll spend the extra $10 and get the WD Drive then. I"m a fan of minimizing future headaches whenever possible :good:

Very good move. I have a WD 640GB drive and it is screamin fast! I replaced a Seagate 500GB drive and it doesn't even compare for noise and performance. WD is the way to go, you won't be sorry.
