im pretty sure you can patent just the idea. you dont have to build it...maybe sketch it on paper. then if someone want to use your intellectual property (the patented idea), you get royalties from it.
the only thing i could think of using something like that for would be to protect sensitive documents. if you could spread the info across 3 thumb drives, and had to know what order they went to retrieve the stuff, it would be pretty sercure.
