I'm looking for a good, cheap computer, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I found a gateway at bestbuy but I wanted someone else's opinion before I buy a new computer. Here are some of the specs:

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor 5000+, 1GB DDR2 memory; Windows Vista Home Premium, double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW drive, 320GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics and 15-in-1 media manager

if anyone wants to see the actual computer description, heres the site

this is my old computer: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _this will be my new one:

thanks for all the comments everyone! they have helped me make up my mind. but i was wondering if it would be cheaper to just replace the motherboard of my old computer?

Depends, what are the other components in your old system? You might need a new MB CPU RAM and GPU. Most of the time the rest of the components can be reused.

If your old system is one by one of the big companys like HP, Dell, Then you will probably need a new case as well, since they use proprietary motherboards which you can not replace with a standard ATX board.

I'm guessing almost everything can be used. HDD, GPU (not integrated) optical, and RAM (if he gets the DDR2/DDR boards)

Could you give us the specs of your origional system?

my old machine is very old and has been discontinued, so it was somewhat difficult to find the specs, but here r most (if not all) of the specs:

1.73-GHz Athlon XP 2100+ CPU, 256MB of DDR266 SDRAM, Windows XP Home, 80GB hard drive, 16X DVD-ROM drive, 32X/10X/40X CD-RW drive, integrated NVidia NForce graphics with 32MB of DDR SDRAM, 17-inch Compaq FS 7550 CRT monitor, integrated NVidia NForce sound, Creative Labs Inspire 2.1 2400 speakers, network adapter, V.92 modem, minitower case; Microsoft Works 6.0, Money 2001, and Encarta 2001; Norton Internet Security 2002; Pinnacle Studio 7. One-year parts and labor warranty; 24-hour daily toll-free support.

If you want to play games you should get a dedicated mid to high range card. Also the processor, I would go with Intel, they are thrashing the AMD line up at the moment. You do pay abit extra, but the increase in performance, and decrease in power consumption and heat is well worth it I think.

I'm guessing this is a compaq system. If so the only things that look like they will work in a new system are the hard drive and dvd rom. So I would say either build a completely new system, or buy a prebuilt. Even the case would not be able to be re used. The hard drive is probably a 5200 rpm drive and I would upgrade the dvd rom to a dvd burner.

Trash it!

5200RPM drive on a desktop is pathetic. That's what I don't like about branded computers, they give you all the crap stuff, I asked some people at HP what motherboards they use, and they couldn't tell me. I still prefer building my own.

Ditto! I hate pre-builts with a passion! Most use one piece of crap or another in their systems. You never get exactly what you want, or you can't find out ahead of time what they are putting in it.

Building your own computer is cheaper as well, I don't get why don't do it more often. Building the computer is where most of the fun is, I just love the feeling of booting up a computer I have just built for the first time and see it running smoothly. The feeling of satisfaction is just amazing.

Cant use the RAM as all the DDR2/DDR Boards only use DDR400...
Cant use GPU or Sound card...
Can use your speakers...
Network adapter... (is it integrated or card?)
Can use case...
Can use modem.

If you really are trashing it give it to me :D I could really use the HDD and RAM. Strip it all if you want first.

would I be able to use any of the parts from my old computer and put it into the computer i built recently? its a Biostar K8M800-M7A Motherboard & AMD Sempron 2800+ CPU
