Is this a Waste of Money for my Computer?

Please note I put this into the Desktop Forum because I thought I'd get a more knowledgeable answer on this then the CD/DVD Technology Forum which doesn't seem to have much activity.

I just bought a Gateway Desktop with a DVD Burner & as I do have an external DVD/CD burner for a computer, is it a waste of money for me to buy an internal CD drive for this computer & pay someone to install it? The purpose of this would be to just copy CDs on the fly which I could still do with my external one.
I would also have the person installing the drive install new memory for the desktop which I know I could do if I had to.

Anyway, is this internal drive a waste of money considering I can connect my external drive to it? Thanks for any opinions.
 
Does your external drive do everything you need it to? Is it fast enough?

I'm assuming an internal drive would be faster, but I don't know. Other than that though, an internal is probably no better.

Installing an internal drive is the same as installing an hard drive.

Well, almost the same. Not worth wasting all that money + gas finding an mech to do that. You can do it yourself.

Agreed. It's really easy. Get a SATA model. It's a piece of cake. :)

Should you install one? If you're happy with the speed of you're external drive, and it works well, then installing an internal drive may not be necessary. It's not really a waste of money. Optical drives are pretty cheap.
 
yea a good quality high speed dvd burner can he yours for $20 and the lightscribe models are around $30. memory is very inexpensive as well, there are plenty of online tutorials with photos you can use to install the drive it is fairly simple, real simple about as easy as installing memory.
 
What internal drive would you recommend? My external burner is pretty good. I just remembered about 10 years ago when internal burners were not in vogue when I bought one and it took a guy who worked on computers for a living who was pretty bright & just charged me a flat rate, a long time to get it connected back then.
 
New DVD burner is around $35. And it is easy enough for you to install it yourself, as they usually come up with user manual.
 
theres a time and a place for external hd's for archiving purposes.
you buy a cheap hd like maxtor and buy a usb case for $50.00.

Or and plug the hd or burner internally. Don't pay someone.
its easy and something you need to learn how to do.
if internal then set the drives with jumper to slave.
if you have a burner installed and want another then make sure its the same model. you'll find out why later. a lot of proggy's support burning more than one cd or dvd at the same time. i use a duplicator my self with 6 burners.
