is this a wise choice

so, im currently running an amd socket am3 platform, with an athlon II x 4 630 clocked at 3.4Ghz. i was going to buy the 1090t six core cpu for $230, but i have been offered by a friend a biostar tpower x58 motherboard, an i7 920, and 6 gigs a g skill triple channel ram for $250. im wondering if the i7 920 and board and ram will outperform my current setup in my sig, and if it will help my 2 gtx 470's in sli perform better. i was told that my athlon II x 4 630 was bottlenecking my 2 cards. will upgrading to the i7 920 resolve this issue and is the motherboard any good. he says that it has been a great board, but he's upgrading to sandybridge. and which is better the i7 920, or amd 1090t? ive seen bench marks and it looks as if the i7 pretty much keeps up with it. basicaly i want to get rid of the bottleneck, so i7, biostar x58 board and 6 gigs of g skill ram for $250, or just get the 1090t for $230? any and all opinions and facts are greatly appreciated

bigtime. thats a steal, id hop on that. considering the board and cpu are probably worth 300 easily, the ram is free....get it.

yeah thats what i was thinking. i just want to be sure that when i get it i wont have a cpu bottleneck anymore, and i want it to run better than my athlon II x 4. hopefully this set up will solve all that. what do other people think

So long as it all works fine (Which it probably does, since its coming from a friend and all.) then I'm very jealous of your incredible deal haha.

well i talked to him again, and he changed his mind. now he wants to sell his whole rig, minus the hard drive. so it would be the biostar tpower x58 motherboard, i7 920 w stock cooler, 6 gig g skill ddr3 triple channel ram, dvd burner, antec 300 case with 2 120mm fans, pc power n cooling 610 watt power supply, and a evga gtx 260 for $475. so now i dont know what to do. if i get the 1090t it will be $210 cause i got a 10% off coupon through newegg, and i will get a free game and a $10 gift card for next time i order. if i go with the friends build, i could use the cpu, board and ram, replace it with the current cpu, board and ram and resell it with the pc power n cooling psu and gtx 260 for $400 and basicaly upgraded to the i7 platform for $75. i dont know what to do. im real tempted to just get the 1090t, and call it good since everything else in my pc is new. i dont know, what would you do? for me i need to do alot of media trancoding and play games.

Well that's still an insane deal on the amount of hardware for that price. I'd buy it, take what I wanted and resell it. If you put it up on Craigslist or something you could probably turn a profit. Just go to your local computer store and compare what's being sold for that price. Nothing will even be close, I guarantee it.

The 1090t @ 4ghz is only a tad bit slower than an i7 920 @ 4ghz. Either way your going to be better off than with the Athlon.

Clock for clock the i7 is a good deal faster for most applications. 4Ghz with a decent cooler is a safer bet on an i7 than a 1090T as well. The only area the 1090T gets a solid victory in is heavily multithreaded apps that will take advantage of the extra cores on it. They're btoh great CPUs, but given the choice between the two I'd take the i7. Plus he gets the set up for ridiculously cheap. Even if it was a computer with another Athlon in it I'd take it for that price, its a really good deal i7 or not (But especially so with the i7 haha.)

well my friend ended up not selling it yet because everytime he goes to order all his new stuff, something will be out of stock, like his video card or motherboard, so i told him to just le tme know when he is ready to sell it, and he said he would as well as sell to me for $450!! so until then, i went ahead and just ordered the phenom II x 6 1090t. this way i can do side by side benchs when i get his computer, and see which is more suitable for me, then sell the other and get most of my money back. ill let you know how the 1090t holds up to my 2 x gtx 470 in sli. ANY PREDICTIONS???

Its a good processor. If the game is capable of utilizing more than 2 cores you should be laughing, so long as you OC the 1090T (Which is criminal if you don't.). I'd still take the i7 set-up over it though, as much as I love my 1055T.
