Is this as dumb as it looks?

is ur mom as dumb as she looks? haha, lol, jk, sorry couldn't restrain myself :)

anmyway i heard that was a pretty sweet coooler... but u don't need this unless ur video card is gettin hot... if it is getting hot it would be a nice choice... it looks pretty sweet also...

Bravo, I must say bravo. For one very, very, very brief moment I was almost slightly offended but then that little comment took me back to all those damn times we say that to each other at my shitty, shitty job. Simply bravo. It made me laugh. :)

Right now I have a 6600 gt that runs at about 49 degrees C idling according the nvidia thing. Should I invest in one? It gets up to about Low 60s after playing a game for hours.

Throwing 30 away. just get an arctic silencer if you're worried about vga temps, the same price, better suited for the task

I"m going to get a nvidia 7900 gt when they stop being sold out on zipzoomfly.com...do you think that would fit it?

what, the thing you said? there are different versions of the Arctic Silencer for different lines, for example, one for the X800 series, one for the 9000 line. No, if you bought a Arctic cooler for your 6600GT I don't think it would fit the 7900GT

I think i lost you. In the end i would want the cooler for the 7900 gt. I was mostly asking about the temp of my current card just for knowledge's sake. I haven't really looked into this artic thing, at all but do they make it for nvidia brands because all I've seen is for ATI.

the heatbuster thing would do exactly what the Arctic cooler would do, except with less success.

With the heatbuster and the stock fan, it would get cool air from the lower part of the case, push it towards the graphics card. the graphics then takes it, pushes the very hot air into the case, heating up the motherboard, memory, and CPU, as well as the power supply.

With the arctic cooler, it would also pull air from the lower part of the case, but instead of spewing very hot air into the case, it just pushes it out the back, keeping your case cooler.

Yes, they do have Arctic cooler for Nvidia cards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835186130

there's the one for the 6600GT

But the heatbuster has a fan that pushes hot air out the back of the case. IF i were to get any coolign thing it would be for a 7900 gt and I don't like when they say something like,

NV Silencer Compatibility (on Nvidia boards)
The NV Silencer 5 is basically compatible to the NVIDIA 7800 series boards except the power plug. You can take the power from the VGA board with connecting the black and red wire or you get the power from the PSU directly. Best is you buy a Y-cable for the 5.25" power cables, cut one plug of it and connect black with black and red (VGA) with yellow (PSU) in order to get 12V. Remove the isolation of the cables and twist them into each other, then isolate it with tape.

I just don't like the idea of having something that is "basically compatible" with a card.

Do you konw when they'll get one out for the 7900 series?

No I don't. I suppose someone on this forum does though (anyone?)

About "basically compatible", it means that it works with 99% of the cards. It's just so they don't get sued when someone tries to install it on an abstract card. For instance installing a Arctic NV silencer compatible with 7800 cards on a 7800GT with two GPUs lol

As dumb as it sounds i just really don't like cutting cords that connect to my psu. BUt thank you for bringing the arctic silencer to my attention.

I have never heard of anyone cutting their cords to connect to the PSU. That just scares me! Zap! "oh I guess my computer is dead :(" lol if you search google for Arctic Silencer reviews, and look for the reputable sources...oh, nevermind
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ArcticCooling/ATISilencer5_Rev2/2

I know that's for Ati, but it is the same, easy installation for each one. I also forgot to mention that having the direct contact to the gpu is not just cooling the air that goes into the gpu, it is cooling the gpu and the video memory as well. anyways, I'm tired. gn!

No joke with the zap. I don't care if it's a plug or even a sticker...If it's connected to a 500watt PSU I really don't want to cut anything. I don't doubt the thing I just don't like the cut factor.

Well, the highest voltage coming out of a PSU is 12 volts, so even if you touch wires while the PSU was on, you wouldn't feel anything (the potential energy is too low to cross your body). 12 volts is what car bateries are, you don't get "zapped" with those. The worse thing you can do is short circuit the PSU, so I can see why you don't want to cut...

Its not the voltage that matters really its how many amps go through you. ;)

If you touch both terminals on a car battery, I won't pay for your hospital bill.

Yeah, but current=voltage/resistance. Given that the resistance of your body is fixed, current is directly proportional to voltage. Thus the higher the voltage, the greater the current flowing through you, and the greater the danger.

It's not something for everyone, of course, but you wouldn't be doing it with the PSU plugged in.
