i built a computer a few years ago and it has a sempron 2200+ this is only for internet use and if someone comes over and wants to play counter strike while im on the other pc. I picked up a working ATHLON 2500 XP how much better will that run then the sempron? and the board i have will it take the athlon? My book that came with the board seems to say it will. the board is a pcchips M863G. And how much can i oc the athlon? the reason for changing is im tearing it down to put a new power supply in since the old one gave out so i figured put some cheap but better parts in. before the ps went out it started having problems... looping sound crash, slow video performance, strange slow downs and crashes to the desktop in apps/games. they tell me this is caused by the ps. Could that be it? or could it be my video card? I use to keep up with this stuff but ive overlooked keeping up and its haunting me lol.

The 2500 will be faster than the sempron, by how exactly how much i can't say but noticeably.

If the book says the +2500 will work in your motherboard it will.

Your oc depends on a couple things.. most importantly your core. Can you tell me what the core is? For example Barton (that may as well be it) If you don't know download this:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
And tell us what it says.

the problems you had could stem from many things, including the powersupply or your video card. Hard to tell.

its a barton

You can probably expect something between 2.2-2.4ghz. This is on air, you may need to tinker with the voltages to get it stable though.

If you overclock your video card along with the cpu it give you even better performance.. may i ask the card?

radeon 9250 128mb agp

The 9250 is more suited to 2d games... But if you wanted you could overclock it to see if it makes a difference. Download ATItool here:
http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

ATItool will only work on windows 2000/XP/2003 so if you don't have one of these don't download!

You could theoretically increase the core clock of the 9250 by about 100mhz. The mem clock won't see an increase whatsoever though. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

(if you want to upgrade give us a price please:)

=) haha just like me! I still use the old ATI Rage Fury Pro 128 32MB card. I dont spend alot on it cause my CPU isnt that fast anyways

i tried this and either way i go it causes errors. the mem side i did get from 200 to 240 but it still has problems. could that mean that it is the video card since changing it even just the slightest on the core side causes errors?

Could be. The mem clock shouldn't even be able to to go up 20 let alone 40.. but if the core is having problems then... Did you only try pushing it up a hundred? If so try raising it by 50 or less.

just found out another thing when i get on counter strike and get in a game the cpu goes up to 100% it never did that so im reformatting and get rid of a bunch and start over and work my way to the problem.
