is this good for the price? sorry if the post is a little long the price will come to $1159 something after taxes it is a gateway fx2070 please dont nag at me about how the processer is an amd im currently on a pentium 4 with 512mb of ram

that is a good computer but u need to get DDR800 or 1066.
u must get a better PSU say 600W or more.
but other than that it is a good build.

Gateway? ouch!

For that amount you could shop around for board+cpu combos, seen a good card, still see 3gb of memory, have a good dvd burner, cpu, case, and even case of choice with extras and assemble it yourself if you were determined enough.

For about the same total here I may not have the 8600 while seeing a
3ghz AMD 6000+ X2,
Antec 900 powered with an
OCZ GameXStream 700w supply,
3 hard drives moved from the old case out of 4,
2gb of performance memory,
Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer card,
an AVerTV tuner card, Vista Home Premium,
1 new sata dvd burner along with a cd writer moved along with the HDs,
plus a new 19" wide screen lcd replacing an old one.

phew! got that all out! Prices have come down somewhat like seen on the cpu for sure! since that was put together last summer. Try seeing a cpu drop some $70 in price. Memory has also seen a good drop along the supply.

doubt i would use it that much, for all i know i may be building a computer towards the end of the year with one of those wolfdale 45nm 3ghz duo core processers (maybe the extreme quad core if i get a job this summer) x38 mobo, 850 watt antec psu, antec nine hundred (sli edition im a sucker for the green lights), crossfireX, 3 or 4 10k 150gb raptors, 4gb of performance memory, maybe one of those creative fatal1ty cards, dunno on the cd burners, new 19" lcd, and vista ultimate 64 bit? thats quite an improvement on the above :\

its weird to see a lot of box manufacturers going with 3gb of ram

Not actually! One of the big complaints heard is that Vista uses more memory where Dell offers any OS or simply seeing Vista on all new systems. What most seem to forget the length of time seen since XP replaced 2000 and ME using more memory then the older versions for the most part.

For example 98SE ran on 16mb while XP needs 128gb minimum with some exceptions. "Gee? XP uses more memory!" could easily be the complaint there as well. In fact many refused to upgrade from 98 to XP. With each new version of Windows you will also note how much larger the memory capacity for boards has become.

3 just seems odd to me, id think they'd just go for 4 but i geuss they're doing the maximum minimum if that made sense. thanks

That would be in regards to the 3gb barrier for the 32bit editions like Home Premium the version seen the most often on prebuilds. It's only also a selling point for seeing a new system with 3gb instead looking at the 256 or 512mb as seen on the older XP models. With Vista requiring a little more memory they simply throw in the extra 1gb to sell their brand.

If you are planning to keep it as a spare after a new build later in the year or pass it along to a family member or friend for the basics there shouldn't be any problems other then the cost itself. For threads getting hijacked here all too common unfortunately.

dunno i'm probably gunna get a warmachine or something if i get a job this summer just for myself i would probably use the other one occasionally, but like i said it would most likely blow the pentium 4 and 512mb of ram out of the water, that comp is 4+ years old just to let you know
