Is this kind of temperature normal for an AC adapter?

Ok, so I'm using a Dell PA-12 adapter on my Dell Latitude D410, and I was just picking it up while it was plugged into my laptop charging and discovered how hot the thing was! It was at the "Can barely hold my hand on this for an extended period of time" level. Is this normal? Should it be getting this hot? If it's that hot on the outside, I can't imagine what kind of beating the internals are taking!
 
Yes, its normal, I've had 2 dell laptops and both chargers get extremely hot while charging, and cools down when it gets 100 percent charged.
 
I've noticed that my HP laptop adapter gets really hot (too hot to hold comfortably). I wondered if that was normal as well. I guess it's typical.
 
Things you can do:

Hello spynoodle,

If you're doing CPU/GPU intensive tasks, your notebook will need more power and therefore causing the charger to get hot. If it gets so hot that you can't touch it, I would contact Dell and report the problem so they have a record of it.

Things that you can do:

1.Turn off your PC and let the adapter cool down for a while, you may have had your computer on for too long.

2. Your adapter is not powerful enough for the power the laptop requires. See if you can get Dell to send one with more power or one with more W (watts) if you have a weak adapter right now.
