Is this okay for gaming?

Hello,

I re-formatted my computer to Windows XP Pro SP2 just now, is it okay for gaming? I am picking up all my parts tomorrow (4GB 800 MHz DDR2 Dual Channel RAM, EVGA Nvidia 9800GT, 500 watt PCZ StealthXtreme Power Supply) and I am hoping to start gaming in a few days after I get a few fans from my cousin. Is WinXP Pro SP2 good to game on?

Windows Vista is better for gaming, due to that fact that it supports DX10 and XP only supports up to DX9.

Most people say that there is hardly any difference between DX10 and DX9, will I need DX10 for COD4 and Crysis? Is a 500 watt power supply good for that rig? I only have a 350w psu right now.

No you don't need it for those games, but it certainly looks better with DX10. 500w should be plenty, I'm not sure what kind of case you are putting all this in, but make sure it has plenty of airflow.

xp is better for you because you dont have a DX10 card anyway

He just said he's picking up a 9800GT.

Oh and btw, if you're staying with XP, go update to SP3. Microsoft doesn't offer support anymore for SP2. Well they do but they charge you $50 everytime you have a question. But SP3 on the other hand is free.

Alright, thank you. I will update to SP3 soon. My case looks like crap but it has a lot of airflow, more than most cases. My 350 watt psu wont be enough after I upgrade right?

Is the SP3 update supposed to be a .iso image? Can someone give me a link because I think I am downloading the wrong file.

Would I have to? I just want run game nicely and smoothly. I don't care if they look the best, I just want them to not be laggy and since I got the chance at the 9800 I took it :) But will Windows XP be good, it makes my comp run so much faster

I just done a upgrade as you can see in my signature, once I upgraded I installed Vista over XP and I now regret it.

I suggest you to stick with XP imo.

XP is better for gaming if you can't find a way to force DX9 on Vista. DX10 is a minimal improvement and robs you much performance. The only reason Vista would be better is if you wanted to max out Crysis because you can't use the very high settings on DX9.
