Is this possible

Ok I bought to 2.8 Northwoods (478 P4) and it seems that they are both bad. With the 1st one my PC would boot and run the BIOS only I couldnt even intall Windows, but it would boot. The second everything went well as far as the XP install although I could not install my favorite game or run Prime95. Windows would crash everynow and then also while I was in the middle of something. Once I put my Celeron back in everything run perfect. My MB is a Biostar P4vtb it can support up to a 3.2Gig at 800FSB so this cpu shouldnt be a prob right?

Also if I by a 3gig could I OC it to say 3.4 and have it still work with my MB?
Thankyou for the help peace out.

With the Northwoods you may have to update the bios itself to get them to run properly. Some can get them up to about 3gb or so.

If you go over what the mobo supports don't plan on going too far there. It will most likely lock where you will then have to clear the cmos back to defaults. Take a look over a few threads at an overclockers forum for tips on that though. You also want memory speeds capatable too. Some say you first back down on both cpu and memory clock speeds to then climb slowly to see just where you can get to in small increments only. Once you get there you know the max for both mem and cpu.

Ok but if my MB says it can support a 3.2 can I push a CPU past 3.2 and still get it to work?
YES
people have gotten opteron 146's and athlon 64 FX's WELL past the 3ghz mark.
one guy with temps like -105C got his athlon 64 fx-55 to like 3.7ghz
and another with like -20C got an opteron 146 to 3.44ghz

I've used this disc several times and my PC is running perfect minus performance. Temps read to be around 28*C 34 under load far from dangerous. The bios is gonna be my first fix then I will take it from there hopefully with the help of the community. Thanks again for the help.
