is this true about nVidia and ATI

I heard that nVidia has a higher core speed making it run games faster and has a better display for quality

and ATI which is better for pure gaming performance not concentrating on the quality but all on the "non-lag" side.
 
No thats untrue, each maker produces their own card which may outperform the competition. Right now the 8800GTX is the best card out there for gaming, but in the next couple months ATI is releasing a new video card that will most likely outperform it.
 
yup, comes down to the specific card

and both companies even offer cards with the same gpu's but different clock and memory speeds

so of course some are going to be 'smoother' than others, but it isn't brand dependant
