The default engine clock seen there was 770mhz OCed to 780mhz with the memory clock OCed from 910mhz to 915mhz is by no means 80% as the author there implies. That was an OC of less then 10%!

Default clocks (or close to it) are 450/1320. So overclocking to 770/1830 is amazing!

I meant default clocks for the 7900GT, not his specific card.
 
Ya the 7900gt are pretty good overclockers. As can be seen by the wide variety of "stock" speeds on different cards from the various manufacturers. Most of the bigger companies at least, like evga and xfx have 2 or 3 models, the only think varying is the speeds.
 
On the last case before running with an ATI Radeon 9550 256mb AGP card I ran an Asus GeForce FX5200 followed by an MSI 128mb model that ran perfect. The same exact drops in performance and lockups in games were seen as well with the ATI model. All three running stock performed well there. The board's bios turned out to be the loser. The NVidia line offers more pixel pipelines for that extra when OCing then the Radeon line. It wasn't a great big surprise to see the 7900 series cards outperform the X1900 series.

The x1900 series out performs teh 7900 series in certain cases, but the 7900 series is pretty incredible.
 
Don't get me wrong on this there. In "certain games" the NVidia/ATI comparison makes that claim. But that is what many seem to go by. The thing not realized is that different games themselves will perform differently on various systems due to the hardware configurations. While never seeing a big difference on an Asus board between NVidia driven and ATI cards memory seemed more of a factor there.
 
Here's a comparison between the NVidia GeForce 7900 GT and the MSI 7900 GT HD that should catch some notice. The MSI model seems to be the favored according to the review at http://www.mvktech.net/index2.php?op..._pdf=1&id=3346
Your point? We're not talking about MSI vs. nVidia referance. All these cards use the same compoenents so its equally impressive Ocing either of them to those speeds.

Well that might be with the core, but you can argue that R5XX sees a bigger performance increase than nvidia when overclocking the memory. Besides, R580 has three times as many pixel shaders on the core than G71, so you could argue that as well.

It wasn't a great big surprise to see the 7900 series cards outperform the X1900 series.

Ya to be honest, I just had to return my 7800gt, and so I am definately thinking about going with a x1900xt compared to a 7900gt. The x1900 series usually does perform a little bit better, especially when you are talking about crossfire vs sli, since sli really is pretty inefficient.

Now that's talking a slightly different animal there for sure. :P Despite favoring an ATI card often I would miss the nForce 4 chipset just to run with a dual card setup(since I still haven't bought a board with an ATI chipset yet! :( ). I would probably end up with a single card with dual VPUs on it.
 
Don't most ATi cards out perform Nvidia cards with filtering enabled?

ATI and NVidia are the leading chip manufacturers always competing with each other to have the top card on the market. When one does better the other struggles to gain that back. Personal preference along with application and need are the things to consider when choosing one or the other.
 
Overall the NVidia line of cards are geared more for gaming. If you look over the specifications when comparing ATI to NVidia driven cards you will clearly see that NVidia cards will include a larger number of pixel pipelines good for OCing.

And ATi isn't geared for gaming? What do pixel processors have to do with OC'ing?

Really, your making it seem like every single nVidia card is better than any ATi card... open your eyes a bit, take a look at R580s 48 pixel shaders and ring-bus memory controller.
