Is Vista a new OS? Or is it an extension for XP?

I'm getting a new (64 bit) laptop which ships with XP, but I get FREE FREE FREE FREE upgrade to Vista (preferably 64 bit version) when it comes out. I don't know how Vista fares in terms of speed/stability, but I can definitely tell you that I will be using XP (32 bit) MAINLY and in a secondary partition (Vista being installed in the first partition). I will occassionally log on to Vista to see how "kool" it is, but will be using XP for everything else. Why? Cuz I don't know how compatible my current applications (32 bit) are with Vista and I do care about having tonnes of freed up system resources, not to mention the insane speeds with the less-resource-hogging XP (32 bit) on a Core 2 Duo with 4MB of cache. :P (Why sacrifice speed and resources on a much "bulkier" Vista until computers becomes 10X as better as they are now)?

Thank you very much for letting me know. The only thing is that thread is so old that people may have changed their minds and can't re-vote. What should I do?

Well, now being a lot of people have tried the beta's I would start a second version simply called Who will get Vista (second version) :P

I'm already said my peice.

I will be an early adopter. I will also be trying like hell to get it free or reduced price.

Question, do the "upgrade" versions do a complete wipe of the hard drive and then reinstall the Vista OS, or does it build on top of an XP installation? I'd hate to have to reinstall XP THEN install Vista every time I reformat (which is often).
