Is Windows Vista really bad?

I have been listening to many views on Vista, including good and bad, but here are some important facts on Vista that everyone should know,

Windows Vista includes an array of “features” that you don't want. These features will make your computer less reliable and less secure. They'll make your computer less stable and run slower. They will cause technical support problems. They may even require you to upgrade some of your peripheral hardware and existing software. And these features won't do anything useful. In fact, they're working against you. They're digital rights management (DRM) features built into Vista at the behest of the entertainment industry—And you don't get to refuse them

DRM gives power to Microsoft and the entertainment industry, here is why

1. They decide which programs you can and can't use on your computer
2. They decide which features of your computer or software you can use at any given moment
3. They force you to install new programs even when you don't want to (and, of course, pay for the privilege)
4. They restrict your access to certain programs and even to your own data files

and here is something more to add to it,
DRM is enforced by technological barriers. You try to do something, and your computer tells you that you can't. To make this effective, your computer has to be constantly monitoring what you are doing. This constant monitoring uses computing power and memory, and is a large part of the reason why Microsoft is telling you that you have to buy new and more powerful hardware in order to run Vista. They want you to buy new hardware not because you need it, but because your computer needs it in order to be more effective at restricting what you do.

What do you think about this ?

Pamela.

Here's what I predict will happen with Vista. Many people will complain about it, moan how its digital rights management will ruin computing as we know it, and hold off on it. Then people will finally buy it (perhaps they get a new computer for example), and will use it and will just learn to live with it. It's sad, but I think it's the truth. I'm still using Windows XP right now, but I'll probably get Vista when I get a new computer. This computer is not at all compatible with Vista.

i don't like vista either

too much hard drive activity, and they ruined the media center interface by making it too complex and slow

aero's nice, but i can do without

Everyone is over reacting about Vista's DRM. Unless you do alot of illegal activities on your PC, you really wont have any issues with it.

My main problem with vista is that it offers no benefit for any end user at all. It has an overhauled interface but it doesn't run any faster than windows XP. Also, of all its boosted added features for really for IT type people. If you read all of the new features it lists it has things that really only benefit people troubleshooting problems. A user doesn't want to troubleshoot their problems they want it to work.

Also the ultimate version is the biggest bait and switch marketing ever. All these people who go out and buy ultimate for their home computer will never use the two features it has over Home Premium. None of them will ever use an encrypted file system and none of them will run a domain network in their home. Yet people go out and buy it just because it says ultimate, which proves my theory on how dumb consumers really are.

I don't see why logically anyone in their mind would want to pay 150 to 300 dollars to ugprade to windows Vista when it doesn't even make your computer run faster or better, it just makes it look pretty and offers better tools to troubleshoot when it crashes. This tells me that MS is starting to finally admit their OS has lots of problems and they are now relying on the user to hopefully fix it themselves.

Plus vista has been in development for 6 years. 6 years and that is what they produce? Sorry, I am not by any means impressed, which is sad honestly. I was impressed by windows xp over previous versions and was hoping it would be better, but ultimately I can not really justify any reason to actually spend money on windows vista.

Vienna is slated for 2009 to 2010 release, so it almost seems like vista is another windows ME and vienna will be what Vista was really suppose to be

None of them will ever use an encrypted file system and none of them will run a domain network in their home.

How very true. And there are some better encryption programs out there anyway than the one that ships with Windows. And having a domain for home use is completely unnecessary.

Im currently on Vista and have had quite a few problems already ( even though I only got a laptop a month ago)
But I know next to nothing of computers so I dont understand why these things happen:

1) When I go to play Oblivion I get a message saying "Oblivion has stopped working" then "Oblivion needs to close". So now Ive downloaded a thing called Oldblivon which allows me to play Oblivion but the graphics are worse and sometimes it starts to get a little slow.

2) I downloaded MSN Messenger but when I open it, after I put in my password and click enter I get a message saying "MSN Messenger has stopped working" then "MSN Messenger needs to close" Ive found out that if I right click on the MSN Messenger icon and click "run as administrator", it will work fine.

3) Ive picked up a virus or something a few days ago (something called "W32.Myzor.FK@yf" as the warning message calls it) (Ive posted about it in the Internet Security part of this forum) and around the same time, another problem started that didnt happen before. As soon as my laptop gets to the desktop, I get a message saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working" then "Windows Explorer is restarting".
Then my screen sort of flashes. After about 3-5 seconds, the message comes up again and repeats the process over and over and over.
When the screen flashes, most programs that where open / opening will close and if i try to open them again, as soon as the messages have come up and the screen flashes, they close again(the only two I know to stay open so far is Norton Internet security and Internet Explorer) and 3-5 seconds isnt alot of time for me to do anything unless i want to go into Norton or come into Internet Explorer.
Ive also posted about this problem but was told by someone that they dont think its due to the virus but to a software problem.

If anyone could provide any info on my last problem / have experienced this / know how to get rid of this anoying problem, ANY help / info would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

I don't care what kind of DRM it is, I am against it. If I legally pay for whatever it is I am using on my computer (video, music, games, etc) I should have the right to copy it to different formats (mp3, FLAC, etc) and back it up with out any hassle.

DRM is something that doesn't have to be enforced but the big companies like it because they think they can hide behind it. Just look at how many actual copies of vista were sold over in Asia since its release. Why would anyone go pay equivalent of $300USD for an OS when they can walk out on the streets and buy it for $1.00USD equivalent. DRM does nothing but annoy legit users. Companies like MS also try to make their products proprietary with their own DRM. Don't even get me started on how much the zune DRM sucks.

Even though people do not like DRM, Microsoft still has a virtual monopoly on the os market, and no one is going to boycott the new version of Vista over DRM, so it's not going to go away any time soon. Microsoft will continue with what they are doing, because they can...and because their Corporate charter states that their purpose is to make as much money as possible through any legal means.

You are very correct, but what vista has also created is switchers to both Mac and Linux platforms. Dell now offers Linux preinstalled, powerspec computers offered it for a few years now, and other companies are catching on. Also, Apple has had a very steady increase in market share over the past couple of years. The next big upgrade everyone does, they have the chance to go to vista or to move on to something different, perhaps better.

DRM is suppose to help out everyone, but really it just screws over the consumer.

Why do you even need to get Vista? Windows XP 64 bit supports more than enough ram does it not? if you want a more flashy GUI, how many hundreds of thousands of windows GUI mods are there out there?

If nothing else Windows XP Pro 64 bit should last long enough for the Open Source community to progress far enough that windows becomes obsolete.

I for one would never change to Mac OSX, its (this is a very extreme opinion) Completely unimaginative and unintelligible UI is a pain in the %$$. Its OS is even less forthcoming with compatibility than windows (I am referring to the reason i have heard for so few games on Mac, that you have to enter a contract with mac to make a game for OSX). End of outrageous and unjustified Mac rant.

Failing all else though surely someone will find a way to kill DRM

that is a very convoluted statement. Apple does not make any developer contract with them, and they aren't incompatible. You are speaking biased opinion not fact.

The open source community will never catch up to the private community because they don't get the funding they should.

i like vista better than xp because i have much less problems switching over than staying with xp. :) also i like vista dreamscene and their language packs. by now every software i used are already compatible with the os so i have no problem with it. Just research on the compatibility before you buy.

I guess i will chime in on this one too like all of the other vista threads... I have had it since it was back in the RC days and got the vista business when it was released in november on msdn. I love it. Its a hell of a lot faster and i havent had one issue with it at all. All of my drivers work and all programs have worked so far... Much faster and more accurate on my pc then xp ever was.

i like vista, i have no prob with it , its just u dont know how to work with it , or u have a really crap computer

That sounds like wishful thinking.

I for one would never change to Mac OSX

I don't think I'll be switching to Mac OS. From what I've seen of it the overall interface looks very cold and uninviting. I've noticed that some OSes have a warm and open feel to them, while others seem rather cold, bleak, desolate and sterile, and not ones that I would call my own. The warmest OSes in my opinion are Windows 3.11 and eComstation.

I am sorry if I misspoke my self. I retract that comment, notice though I did warn it was a "extreme opinion" and a "unjustified mac rant"

And the advantage the open source community has is that it is a community, not just a number of individual programmers. my point is that there is more contributors to a open source OS than a "mac" or "Microsoft" one. Maybe they do need more money and more financial backing, I do not have enough information to say if they do or not.

Again this opinion may be unfounded, and biased. if it is I apologise.

no worries, I am just really tired of people who try to debate the mac versus PC thing and well don't know a thing about mac or they are a mac fan boy and just like to dis windows. I just hate it when people print, publish, or speak misinformation on the subject, and it is a tired, no it is a dead horse. Therefore I will no longer flog it.

I am just extremely disappointed in vista, for the money it costs to upgrade and the fact that it was in development for 6 years you would think MS would have a better product. You gain no performance increase from upgrading. I have vista on my work desktop and it does not run any better or faster than my windows xp. All the new features they put in benefit the power user and IT worker. None of them really benefit your John Everyman end user.

Plus that MS has announced that Vienna will be out around 2009ish makes me think that vista will be another windowsME
