I am planning to build a gaming PC and a friend has offered a free copy of XP. I will take this happily and upgrade when i have more funds (Getting the components will dry out my finances :( )

Is XP adequate for gaming? Are there dis-advantages to it?

XP has the advantage of using less ram, and so, providing more ram for your games. But still, if you're building a computer, the extra ram used won't be a problem. If i were in your position, i'd run on xp for a while, wait to see what it's capable of, (regarding the newest games, because it handles everything else like a charm), and after i save some more money, i'd upgrade to 7.

The only game that I normally run that does not play on XP is BF3 (which is stupid because they did absolutely nothing i can see that DX9 could not have done). XP is still plenty capable of handling games, assuming you don't have a 100% need for DX10 or above.
