ISP/throttle/bad internet

Ok so I've read on my ISP's website that they throttle internet for those users who exceed 3gb download in the hours from 4-9. Furthermore it said, that users who had their speed throttled would still be perfectly able to use the internet, browse and stuff. But here's the deal.

There are 4 of us in the house. And we have tried to figure out when/if we exceed our alloted usage. Some times we probably have, but not all the time. But still, our internet is (at most times) virtually non-existent. I can't even finish a speedtest.

We're supposed to have a (up to) 20mb connection.

So here's my question. Or questions.

Do you think it is our ISP who throttles our internet or is there some other problem?
And when they say that even though it is throttled you are able to use the internet, at what speed would that be acceptable? I mean jesus, it took me an hour and a half to download skype...

Cheers

I think they are ripping you off. call them up and complain. if they are apathetic, threaten them with the BBB

So....is this why my internet may get miserably slow at certain times of day? Do you have Road runner as well? I'm suppose to get 7mb dl but seriously, my speed can get ridiculously slow sometimes.

Rex, quit downloading pirated files and the problem will go away.
You wouldn't be using that much just gaming.

Exactly. Many game patches are huge, WoW etc etc and battlefield (which a lot of people still play) has a 1.2gb patch.

Even the smaller 300mb or so ones will add up. youtube videos, uploading photos. everything.

Honest to god, I have not downloaded a single file except skype, mediamonkey etc + some timetables from uni.

I don'w know if any of my housemates have, but even after they have not been home, the internet STILL is shit.

i would call your provider and ask them how that works and when does the full speed come back.

As far the speedtest goes. Make sure all other computers are turned off and do a speedtest from your system.

www.speedtest.net

and then click on the forum link to copy the results and then you can paste them in a reply here.

Ok great, now I have another problem. Thanks for the help so far BTW.

Or I should probably say several problems.
1 is that sometimes the internet disappears alltogether. This has to be ISP problem, cos it happens to everyone in the house, and there's nothing wrong with our connection to the router.

The other problem is that usually I could use the internet properly during the night, but i cant anymore (not as much traffic during the night, so I could enjoy beheading people with my m24 on bad company in peace), but lately the internet connection is so unstable that it simply is not possible. I take a speedtest, and it can immediately fly up to 20mbps. But then the "progress bar" stops and the speedtest starts to decline. The progress bar can then suddenly start moving again, and speedpin starts to move back upwards. Sometimes, it can take almost a whole minute for the speedtest to complete, and it can show results between 15mbps to 20, but it's completely useless, cos I can play anything. The lag is just too severe.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or am i gonna have to pay Richard Branson a personal visit?

You are on Virgin media I take it. Virgin media are well known for ripping people off. They might give you 20mb for about 5 min in a day. Their pings are about are four or five times bigger than other ISP's. Their support is usesless. If you want to play games raw speed is useless. You need to have rock solid(:P) pings. Visit fast.co.uk, it may be expensive but it is fanatastic.

I have found Virgin Media to be one of the better ISP's for speed and ping. The only problem I find with them is their stupid "fair usage policy" that throttles you when you download too much.

The only solutions really for your problems are to either upgrade your package (to help stop the throttling), contact virgin and explain your speed problems, and/or reset your router :)

is this supposed to be helpfull advice?
did he say he was downloading pirate files?
can you not download legal music etc?

dam some people point the finger a little too easy!

i just downloaded call of duty world at war patches and they added up to 3.5gb in total then i have to download patch for battlefeild bad company 2 patches....

sounds too me like the op needs to ring his isp and bring the subject up to them so atleast they know you know and it will go on record, if you have this problem and keep reporting it you will most likely be able to get out of the contract with the isp due to there poor service

its happened to me when i was on AOL i called them loads and in the end i asked to end my contract and they agreed with no charges etc

Ok guys sorry if I have wasted too much of your time, but here's the deal so far.

The deal when the internet completely disappears = Virgin Media's fault. We're calling them tomorrow to see what's up.

The thing with the network when my speedtest is acting up = My Wifi adapter.

I tried hooking the laptop up to the router with a lan cable. Everything was brilliant. Speedtest took about 3 seconds to finish, great speed, all is good. So I suppose the problem is the wifi. And I've been scouring the internet for a solution, but so far I've come up with nothing, except that some other people have had the same problem. I think its called intel 4965AGN. I've tried updating the driver, rebooting, all sorts of stuff, but nothing happens. The strange thing though, is that it keeps saying i am connected to the router, but my internet is still shit. so now my question is twofold:

Is there any remedy for this?

If not, is it possible to change the card? I have a dell xps m1530...

Thank you in advance.

Honestly just run the cable. it's faster and won't fail or disconnect unless the ISP is having problems.
