issue with scanning for virus

My wifes computer has windows 7 pro 64. Seems to be running ok and was suspecting it needed a wipe. Hasn't been done since 7 was installed. I was cleaning it up and started scanning for virus's and a couple hours later it still shows only 1% complete. I told her and she said she ran all night and still said 1% complete. Im guessing the hd is getting ready to dump maybe. Unless im missing something. like said its running ok. And not that slow. Any suggestions on what to look at and what program is being used to test the HD?
Its a Seagate or WD. don't remember now.

First of all, what scanner are we talking about that stops at 1 percent?

Kaspersky Pure. Thats what is on all the computers in the house. She never had a problem before. Been using since it came out. one thing comes to mind. She has 200,000 files and all associated with her embroidery etc. its a woman thing.

Try Malwarebytes and see if it finishes. Does it freeze on a certain file?

But does it kaspersky freeze on one certain file every time you try to scan?

Read again. No. this morning i could watch and observe it on each file scanning. Didn't stop at one file.

Okay, i'm confused. I thought you said malwarebytes scanned and finished. So Kaspersky scanned and finished?

Kaspersky stayed 1% during the entire scan. Seen it scanning all the files.
No change even after uninstalling. Then did new upgraded install. Same thing.
now that Malawarebytes ran. I'm more confused.
