If I want to build a desktop computer myself, could someone tell me what would I need in details? Hardware model will be concerned later. For example, I know i need the following items:

ATX TOWER CASE
MOTHERBOARD (LET SAY WITH BUILT-IN SOUND CARD, VIDEO CHIP AND LAN)
CPU
CPU FAN
RAM
IDE HARD DISK
FLOPPY DRIVE
CD ROM
POWER SUPPLY
2 IDE CABLES (1 FOR HDD, ANOTHER FOR CD-ROM)
1 FLOPPY CABLE (SORRY, DON'T KNOW WHAT IT CALLED EXACTLY  )
1 AUDIO CABLE (CONNECT BETWEEN CD ROM AND THE MOTHERBOARD)

Thats what i can think of so far, do i miss something?

I think you got it pretty much covered there...since you want a motherboard with onboard graphics and sound you won't need a graphic card and sound card. You might wana buy an extra case fan. The cables usually comes with the motherboard and stuff.

1 AUDIO CABLE (CONNECT BETWEEN CD ROM AND THE MOTHERBOARD)
Shouldnt really be needed on modern systems since the data is conveyed via the IDE cable but you can get it you want

the cables come comes with the drives. getting extra would be a waste of money. Instead of a cd rom i would go with a dvd-rw. With the avablity of cd-rws you would really need a floppy drive. but they are only $12 new.

Problem about the Case and CPU

I have some questions about the Case model and CPU.

I know there are big and small cases in the market. I am going for a big case, which is called ATX case I think. My question is that is there a standard in all motherboard (for normal and micro ones), i.e. are all screw positions are the same on different motherboards?

Also, is the CPU fan comes with the CPU itself? if not, how to choose the right CPU fan (I am thinking about Celeron or P4 (socket 478 and 775)?

Thanks

Well (1) there isnt a reason to buy a mATX board anyways so if you buy one ... thats already something wrong (2) mATX boards fit in ATX cases (not the other way obviously).

Only if you buy retail/box kit

if not, how tochoose the right CPU fan (I am thinking about Celeron or P4 (socket 478 and 775)?
1. Pick the material you want or the heastink: AL, AL/CU, CU
2. Select heatsink related features: whether you wanted cut fins vs soldered fins, heatpipes,
3. Pick an appropriate fan for your heatsink (if you have that option) ... with fans you'll want to decide on, essentially CFM ratings
