It's Broke?

Ok, this morning, about 10 minutes ago, I went to turn on my 17" Flatscreen CRT Monitor. It powered for a second and then turned off instantly.

So, I push it on and off. No workie. I switch the 3 pin lead and plug socket. No wokie. Power light doesn't come on at all.

Has my monitor died for absolutely no reason at all? :(

By the way, it's a Dell P780.
 
It could be a monitor problem,but it also could be a graphics card problem.Have you tested if a different monitor works?
 
Its probably a monitor problem. Just a hunch. But yeah, try another monitor and GPU if you have one. Aside from that, I really can't think of anything else to try.

And yes, it sounds like the monitor is dead. They have 22" widescreens selling at some store today for black friday.

Its usually the big ol' massive fuse inside the CRT, so if you fancy risking death and spending like £3 on a new one, you might be able to fix it, i don't recommend it though, seriously, only if you've done it hundreds of times before

No I haven't tested a different monitor, because even if you don't have the cable from the monitor plugged into the graphics card, it still turns on.

Yeah, I'm 100% sure it's the monitor.

Hmmm.... Death? The monitor has been without power for about 36 hours. How bad can it be?

I replaced the monitor's fuse for the first time ever, and it works! :D

And no, I'm not dead. :P
 
Hehe, thanks. :)

I was pretty worried about electricuting myself to be honest - especially with what I've read about monitors and how much electrical charge they hold. So I wore those rubber gloves that doctors wear when they go to do surgery! lol! :D

They hold full charge for weeks. So you're pretty damn lucky you're still alive!

Are you serious? It can really kill me?

Well, just so you know, the fuse has just blown again. I think it might be the extension cable that I'm plugging the monitor into.

Would you recommend I go out and buy a fuse to replace it? Or should I not risk my life again, and buy a new one?

What I don't understand is that it has been working fine for 2 years. And now the fuse just decides it likes to blow every now and then. What could be causing this? Do you think there is a short circuit on the PCB of the monitor? Do you think I need to buy a new one?
 
TFT is just a generic term for LCD I believe. Could be mistaken. Anyways, the big difference on LCD's is the type of panel used. Different panels are good for different things. Some are slower to change image (slower response time) while reproducing very good color and image quality, while others have very fast response time but have difficulty producing the full range of colors. There are other panels as well...but basically those are the two that are used the most. Best Buy had a great deal this weekend ( I know you're UK, but ya know) where you could have gotten a 19" 940BW for 129.99, 120 dollar off instant savings on a widescreen quality lcd monitor. I was tempted to buy it..but I just bought my 20.1" so...

Ohh... Well - I just went out and bought a used 17" monitor for £15 which is a deal and a half to be honest. I was expecting to shed out £35!

Anyway, I haven't had any problems with it as of yet (apart from fiddling with the display settings for the image to be square). So it looks as if the problem was a faulty monitor.

The guy at the shop informed me that it was extremely dangerous to replace the fuse because of the very high voltage it holds, and that it was completely stupid of me to do something like that.

All I can say is I live to fight another day... :D
 
Haha I was telling my girlfriend about that, and she said she wanted to get rid of the CRT she's using now with her LCD monitor needign to be sent in, cause she's afraid of it now. LOL

I'll take a picture of my new monitor later for you, see if I can entice you more. :)
