Some members will understand why I titled the thread the way I did. lol.

So, My son's video card is going out on him causing issues in games and such, its a 5770. I'm gonna give him my 6870 which works great in his system and I'm going to upgrade. I'm tossed between These 3.

270x 4gb - http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-version-PCI-Express-Graphics-11217-04-20G/dp/B00FLMKN6I
280x 3gb - http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Version-PCI-Express-Graphics-11221-00-20G/dp/B00FLMKNE0

I was even thinking of the regular 280 - http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11230-00-20G/dp/B00IZXOW80

Now I only play the FPS games such as Battlefield and Call Of Duty series. Recommended system requirements for COD advanced warfare recommends a 4gb video card.

Requirements for Battlefield Hardline is a 290 with 3gb of vram.

So my question is...

Do you think the 270x 4gb would be ok or go with the 3gb 280x? I was hoping to stay below $225. And I'm partial to Sapphire.

I'd go for the 280X at least at this point in the game. Should get a bit more 'usable performance' over time versus the aging 270x/7870 rebrand. If you're feeling adventurous it isn't too difficult to get a used 290 off eBay at sub $200 prices.

It pains me that they compare 290s with 760s...

Y u no GTX 970? :P

Because the gtx970 is over $300 and out of my price range.

Yeah, I've been thinking of just going the 3gb 280x. And of course my son's card went out at bad time as I really don't want to spend the money right now.

I know, i'm biased towards the 970. I just recently built a rig for my friend with the 280 and he is very happy with the card. I tried to get him to budge on the 280x, but he was not willing to spend more than 200$ on the card at the time. If money is an issue I would say the 270x is even a safe bet, but obviously the 280x will provide some more FPS bang for your buck.

For around 250$ A 4gb version of a 960 could be had as well if you wanted to consider the green team.

R9 380 is just a 285 with a clock bump. I probably wouldn't get a 2 GB card at this point in the game. :P

I'm just trying to make a good decision here. The new cards will do directx 12 compared to directx 11 for the 200 series cards. There is only a $20 difference between the 2gb and 4gb cards, so would get the 4gb anyway I think. So do you think the 4gb 380 would be a good choice at this point instead of getting the outdated 280x?

But what is this about the reviews saying it doesn't have a backplate?

Looks pretty bare to me :P

Some cards come with a backplate that generally makes the card a bit more rigid. I'm sure you've seen some cards that bend over time and warp a little bit, usually a backplate would help alleviate that.

I don't think my 6870 has a back plate as I can see the pcb. I don't think I have anything to worry about. It seems the 380 is a tad shorter than my 6870 anyway.

Ordered the card last night. Not sure with it being a holiday if it will ship today or Monday. Should have it middle to late next week anyway with it shipping from California. Can't wait to get it and try it out.

So my card came today. Yay... Unfortunately, won't be able to really test it out for some time though. In the middle of a bunch of computer work before it stacks up on me. In the process of building a second system in 2 weeks and will have another coming up next week among other responsibilities I have. The card is a little heavier then the 6870 and about the same size. So I'm a little behind in my FPS games, still haven't completed 2013 games of Battlefield and Call of Duty. Then I have to buy last years games. Joy Joy.
