Will iTunes (the free downloadable version) convert .mp3 files to .cda format?

I have a CD with ~9 hours of .mp3 files on it, but my Sony deck can't read .mp3 CD-R's. So, I need to take this CD, convert the files to a format my deck CAN read, and then burn it to a CD. So far I'm only SURE that .cda format works.

Anyone else know of a better way? Or better software that is FREE to download?

The thing with .cda files is that they're not really files at all. More like markers for the pc to read where the tracks are, meaning you are talking about audio cd's, as opposed to data cd's which is the cd with your mp3's on it.

iTunes is very good an importing your collection, and letting you burn compilations from that. However you will find that the number of songs you can fit on one cd is severely reduced (about 80mins per cd).

So, do you know what format I should convert to? My deck says it can read CD-R/CD-RW but apparently not ones with .mp3's on them (or data cd's i guess it is). I figured I wouldn't be able to hold all the songs on one CD (1 song is 1 hour 45 minutes ) I was just gonna pick my fav's.

ONE SONG IS 1H 45M LONG!?!?!? What is it you are trying to burn?? If you are trying to burn the disk so it can be read by your standard cd player deck, then I'm afraid I stand my my 80 minute estimate.

If it's one track that 1:45 in length, then you're gonna have problems. if it's a whole album "stuck" together, then you will be able to split the mp3 file.

If you use a burning program like Nero and drag those files to an Audio CD window it will show the entire length of the CD and how much you can fit. Once you go to burn these, it will convert them in order to burn them.

About the 1 hour and 45 minute song: It sounds like you put that CD in your car and that's what it said on the display. That's what data disks will read on a regular CD player, they just display the total length of a CD's data.

I'll try this with Nero, I just don't want it to burn and keep the .mp3 format.

And yes really, it's one song, single track, that's 1:45mins. It's a techno song, mixed by DJ Tiesto...very long indeed. There is another that is 1:20mins, but I don't know who it's mixed by. MOST of the other songs are only 5-6 mins. I won't be burning the 2 long ones.
