I've got a big problem

I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. I accidentally downloaded some kind of weird virus yesterday, and immediately my PC shut down. When it rebooted, all I see is my desktop background picture. No icons, no taskbar. The start button didn't work. Task manager is what I am using to navigate. Everything works in terms of hardware, all my files are still in tact. It's just that there are no icons and no task bar and this is annoying as hell. I ran the virus scan and it got rid of nearly 120 threats, and i rebooted but its still doing the same thing.

Can someone please offer some advice? Has this ever happened to any of you? I don't know what to do and I really don't have the money to take it to a PC geek. TIA

either wipe the disk and re-install or computer geek.

or a new hard drive!

I hav to agree with bcohen4. Either wipe the hard drive and reinstall or buy a new hard drive. I don'y really have any other ideas.

I got one, A system restore through the command prompt, Before you start Windows F8 Safe mode then go to the Command prompt one and type "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe", And go back to a day before you got the virus, Then after virus scan it to be safe. I think that would work anyhow.

Did the system restore, didn't work :(

A new hard drive, huh? I thought that if the hard drive went bad I would have lost all my files?

Well if you ran system restore when Windows is running normally the virus (Depends) will stop it. I had something similar to this happen before, And I did what I posted above helped me.

yeh thats happend to me aswell, i had to resotre my computer back to its factory settings, u dont need a new hardrive.

Oh, then I will try the restore in safe mode and see if that helps. Um, and if worst comes to worst I can always save my files on an external drive and dump it. But that is a royal pain in the ass

oh well.
