I've got an email hijacking virus

I think a virus has hijacked my computer and is using it to send spam through my hotmail account to all my contacts. I'm running virus scans as we speak.

Is there anyone who can help me further?

The first thing you should do is download rkill.exe and Malwarebyte's Antimalware.

Boot into Safe Mode and run rkill, then install and run Malwarebytes Antimalware and remove anything it finds.

Next, download and run the executable for TrendMicro HijackThis!. Post your scan log here and we'll see if there's anything else that needs to be looked at.

In the meantime, change your password to your Hotmail account. Use something strong, new and unique. Here is a password creating guide if you're not sure how to make a strong password: http://www.econsultant.com/articles/how-to-create-a-strong-password.html

You should also install a free anti-virus to help keep you protected. I prefer AVG Free Edition or Avira AntiVir.

Follow those steps and post your HJT log and we'll help you further. ;)
 
Most likely all you need to do is change your hotmail password as account passwords from hotmail and yahoo have been hacked for the past few months. Once you change the password, the spam emails will stop.

I've had a few friends that this has happened to and all that is needed is to change the password.

I downloaded rkill, HijackThis, and MBAM.

I installed rkill, HijackThis, and MBAM (in that order).

I ran rkill, HijackThis, and MBAM (in that order - sorry, deanj20, I know this is not the order you specified - I goofed).

Based on this, can you tell if the virus that's been hijacking my email has been squashed? I noticed the MBAM report doesn't tell what kind of threats have been detected. IIRC, the threats it detected were called "rogue" something. Are there any other logs that would help shed some more light on this?

Yes, I did this... and so far it seems the spam has stopped.

But I still don't like the idea of a virus sitting on my computer, so I ran the malware combatting software in addition. Does anything stand out for you? Anything indicating the presence of a email hijacking virus?
 
Did you run the file called Registryfix?

Rerun hijackthis and place checks next to the following entries.

Okay, I ran RegistryFix (in safe mode) and it told me this:

A total of 5158 problems were found, 3416 of which were in the registry.

Then it told me that because I was running only a trial version, it could fix a maximum of 6 problems, and that 4 were available for fixing. I'm not sure how to interpret this. In any case, I told it to fix the problems, and it did.

Then I ran HijackThis, and removed the items you told me to remove.

Do you recommend any further actions be taken?
 
Uhm...You weren't supposed to run that. All I asked is if you have run the program or not, I didn't say to run it. That is a rogue program. Please uninstall the program in add/remove programs if it exists. Then you will need to rescan your system with malwarebytes, make sure you click on the update tab and click on check for updates and then let it. Then go back to the scanner tab and do a quick scan and post the log.

Lets get a better idea of whats going on with your system.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.


In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Please post an uninstall list using hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save list and save it. Then copy and paste it back here.

Oh, I misunderstood. It's not uncommon for people to say "Did you do X?" and mean for X to be done. That's what I thought you were saying.

I'll try to do as you say, but I may not be able to under my present time constraints. I'm going on holidays at the end of the day and won't be back until the new year. I hope I can work with you again at that time.

Good news. I don't see anything bad in the logs except some minor cleanup. Please do the following.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
 
Please keep in mind also that hackers can take your email address and send emails without hacking your email and just using code. They end up sending out email through their POP or IMAP server with an false email portraying you. That is all I will delve into that subject. I run Vipre Antivirus which is an award winning antivirus program for 2010 and requires the fewest system resources. It works great and if you have a third party email program, it protects you there too. Remember to practice safe web searching!

Edit: Make sure you report it with your email provider and ISP (if possible) as well. "Federal law prohibits hacking into e-mail, but without further illegal activity, it's only a misdemeanor."
