J:\ is not accessible. the request could not be preformed because of an I/O device er

Hello,

I have a Simple Tech External 160gb hard drive, and when i try to go view its contents in "my computer" it says J:\ is not accessible. the request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error.

I haven't had this problem before with the laptop( it let me access it with no problem) and now am having trouble. i have tried plugging it in and out, uninstalling the driver...(it comes with a driver i guess because it doesn't require a cd, when you stick it in it says found new hardware, then says hardware is installed and ready to use)I am NOT willing to reformatt it because i have tons of music on it...and I have also tried restarting my computer, and it still says the error!!!

Also...it SOMETIMES lets me view what file system it is and the free space and capacity, but it RARELY lets me view it's contents, and sometimes doesn't let me see the drive J:\ hard drive icon in My computer!

Remember*I am not willing to reformatt or open up the hard drive

Someone please help. I don't know what to do...thanks

oh man...i just tried it on my other computer running windows xp sp2 and it detected it, said "found new hardware" and such and then"your hardware is installed and ready to use", and even showed up in the "my computer" and it still gave me the error...J:\ is not accessible. the request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error.

is there a difference in the os that you are running on the laptop?

is there a protection switch on the hdd? like security switch locking it up and not?

no it does not have a switch to protect it...and there is no difference in the os(windows xp service pack 2) the laptop runs, the sr1710nx (the computer where i first incountered the error),or my custom computer that i just tried, getting the same error

THEY ARE ALL THE SAME OPERATING SYSTEM AND WITH ALL THE UPDATES

wow, i guess it really hurts you when we ask you a question to better assist you.

time is of the essense and it seems every second that passes tear you apart.

are there any physical damage? dents?

have you tried it on the laptop again and does it work?

that problem is very common among problems, cd's, dvd's, and more.. so there really isn't a defiinite solution. atleast not one your probably willing to try.

From what I can see about the SimpleTech external HDDs, they're just an ordinary desktop hard drive inside an external case. If you're willing, and this is the only solution I can think of, open up the case and unplug the hard drive. Plug it inside your computer as you would an ordinary IDE HDD. When Windows boots, it should chkdsk it, and repair this issue.

Remember*I am not willing to reformatt or open up the hard drive
Then your not going to go very far then..... best bet is to send it back to where it came from if your not willing........

computer hakk, i'm not madd or hurt...I'm not mad when i use capitals...i just use them.........seriously guys i wasn't mad or upset or whatever
:) :) :) :)

oh ya forgot to answer your question computer hakk, no there is not ANY physical damage to this drive...and i am not sure about it working on the laptop i'll check later... when my dad gets home..and then i might try actually putting it inside the sr1710nx computer
