Jerky Premier Playback

I just bought Adobe Premiere Elements for video editing. It works fine except for one thing: The playback in the program is jerky, but when I export the file as an .AVI, it plays fine.

Here are my PC specs:
Pentium 4, 2.53 Ghz
50% free space on my hard drive

The video that I'm using isn't captured, I'm importing it from a digital camera, and the videos aren't originally jerky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

I also reinstalled it, and had the same problem. I switched monitors, no luck (even though I didn't think that would work). Has anybody, by chance had this problem?

Well, it seems like a problem with the actual program here... Have you gone through the settings in Elements to see you can adjust the playback settings? Also, what type of file is the original video?

What kind of AVI are you trying to play back? And how do you have Premiere setup? If you have it set for say DV videos but you're using some other form of compressed AVI, then that's more overhead on your system. Or if you're just using some form of compressed video, that can be harder on your system to tear it apart. If you want smooth editing and the best quality output, capture uncompressed video(or DV if you can). Don't compress anything until your ready for the final export.

The AVI file is strait from my digital camera's memory card (well, i copied it to the hard drive first), and it's not compressed. I installed the program on my laptop and it works fine, but I have practically no space on its Hard drive, so I would prefer to use my desktop.
