I don't think looking at a computer screen could ruin your vision... My eye doctor said it is fine to read in the dark (mom my dosen't like that) so I can't see why you can't use a computer in the dark... LCD's won't give you a head ache though because they don't flicker like CRT's.
monitors don't hurt your eyes provided you blink (at least that's what the optomitrist said). the damage done is from them drying out your eyes and blinking stops that from happening
Well I think that having the light turned off does help though. I mean I have to have a light on when I am using a computer. Having just the LCD at night hurts my eyes pretty bad. However, that probbaly depends on the sensitovity of eyes to light. Mine are pretty sensitive. I would simply try and see what suits you best. I suggest having a nearby light source to limit the possible eyestrain.
Our drafting lab at school is dark. The lights are tinted over so there is some light but not much and nobody there seems to have problems. We use 19" CRT flat screens.
well beings as this is personal opinion as I dont know LOL.. I would think that yes it is bad for you but in any light. starring at anything long enough to cause eyestrain is not good 4 U. If you stare at a bright screen long enough i'd imaging yes but certainly nothing to be alarmed about .. Take a 15 minute break every hour if at all possible .
I've sat in front of the computer for years and I've perfect eye sight .
Theres only one disadvantage with using red light, that I can see. If someone uses red light all night and then walks into a room full of white/ normal light without knowing, their eyes would get really messed up.
Having the monitor as the only lightsource is not good for your vision. If you are exposed to such over a longer period of time you may actually get some degraded eyesight from it. This goes expecially to those with CRT-monitors.
Laptop screen/ monitors in general are poor too . The only laptop monitors that are good are the Sony Vaio, they're really clear and not that strainful
