Are stock motherboards generally 'universal size'. So if I get a new case will the mb fit if the case is slightly bigger or smaller than the old case?

If the motherboard is an ATX then you need an ATX case. If the motherboard is a micro atx then either a micro atx case or atx case will work.

Are you looking at a new one, or a motherboard from a prebuilt computer? It may say on the board. If not, look in the manual or search for it online.

You can. ATX motherborads are bigger and measure about 30cm x 24cm, while mATX (more common in prebuilt computers) are about 24 x 24 cm.

Yes; an ATX case can take any ATX and smaller motherboard (including mATX).
