Just Finished Building New Computer... And It Won't Work

Grrr... If I have a bad RAM slot I might just kill someone. I bought my motherboard from a place where I can probably NOT return it. Maybe I have to play around with the voltage? I don't think this is the case though as the sticker on the RAM says 1.8 V and I BELIEVE that is what the default for the P35-DS4 is.
 
the ram tells the mobo what to set the voltage to, if i remember correctly. how is the computer fairing now? has it gotten through the windows installation in one piece?

oh i apologize for not reading your post correctly i didnt realize you already had windows on that HDD... i would SUGGEST reinstalling windows anyways, and wiping the drive but i assume you have data on it which you dont want to lose, so maybe there is a way around it. i have had cases where you only need to use the cd-key to keep using windows after a motherboard update, so you might be in luck.

Oh okay.

Well I bought an external hard drive when I was out gettin all the other stuff so I backed most of my files up :D. It is almost through the windows installation. I am hoping to god that I can put the second stick back in there somehow as it would be a real punch to the face if I could only run on 1 stick for some unknown reason. I hope it isn't a hardware problem but from the looks of things it probably will be....

So you have no idea why it is that the RAM is not working?
 
well the most common cause is DOA they just dont work. value sticks are often the most succeptable to this. i know you spent alot on this build, so im hoping that whatever it is is salvageable
 
No idea... Everything is running smooth when I don't have that second stick of RAM in there. I also came across a post from a guy who had pretty much exactly the same problem. He replaced his motherboard and PSU and it made no difference. Could be different though.
 
Maybe the ram is gone ? thats what i think it happened to me once when i had my old pc i had to get new ram and it worked fine :P
 
Argh I just bought it today. And it's pretty good stuff Geil 800 Mhz. But yes I suspect that is what happened :'(.
 
no my thinking is a bad ram stick, because his other works just fine. the power supply i ruled out because of the amount of Amps on the 12V line, it is sufficient at LEAST to start his system and allow it to post, so that is not the cause either.

oh and bud sorry about the runaround crap it takes me a little while to get my bearings, i hope this has worked...
 
Okay. This is fantastic I am currently posting from my computer :). I have a P35-DS4. It turned out to be a bad RAM stick as lovely? predicted. Thank you so much mate you saved me A LOT of money! I tried putting it in each slot by itself and it just would not work whereas the other stick would. Only problem is I bought it from a computer fair so taking it back will be quite hard.

For some reason my Q6600 started off at 1.6 GHz. Needless to say I was quite unimpressed but I quickly pushed it to 2.4 GHz and now it is quite snappy :).

I just wanna give a big thank you to computer forums and in particular lovely? for being such a BIG help! I love my computer now and plan to take it above 3.2 GHz as I learn about oc'ing. Time to fire up that big fan on top of the antec 900 ;).

Nice job. I agree with lovely. I'm 99% sure it's a bad RAM module. Unfortunately, it happens. Do you know the stepping of your Q6600? When you get a chance, download and run CPU-Z. This program will tell you the stepping of your CPU.

My Q6600 is a G0 (I made sure when I bought it :P) However I am having some major troubles with it. First of all for some reason at default it is 1.6 GHz :S. Not sure why, I think it's cuz the multiplier in the bios says X9 but when I check CPU-Z it says X6 for some reason. Also according to everest it is running EXTREMELY hot. At one point 100 degrees when I was on stock 1.6 GHz speed :S. This CANNOT be right. I touched my motherboard and the HSF and it is not nearly that hot. The HSF was tepid at best. So I am at quite a loss for what to do.

BTW I have turned C1E off but my motherboard does not seem to have an option for EIST even though the manual says it does... Not sure about that one.

The multiplier is right. Sometimes, I've noticed, CPU-Z will recognize the multiplier as X6 - no big deal. The default front side bus setting should be 1066 MHz in the BIOS. If your mainboard allows you to adjust this setting, you may find it under the "Advanced Chipset Features" heading in the BIOS. I'm not sure what your mobo is, but search the BIOS for this setting.

That's not right. Try Core Temp, and/or PC Wizard 07 to measure your temps.
