Just like vista, more stable and for free

So I read this article about a trial of windows server 2008 while on the seaside. It's a 240-days trial and if you do some setup, you can make it look just like vista and work better. It also "sees" the whole memory on 32-bit. And it's almost free. I think I'm going to try it. What do you think? It also comes clean and lets you install which features you want.

looks cool. by sees the memory, does it utilize it all? because vista sp1 sees it all but doesn't utilize.

Yeah, it utilises all the memory. After a few hours of work with it, it does everything vista does.

Server 2008 seemed to run faster on my system than did Vista, but:

1. I couldn't get it to accept video drivers other than the standard windows VGA set;

2. Incompatible with the Motorola sync software for my phone;

3. Live Messenger WILL NOT install on a server platform;

After you've done it a couple dozen times it becomes effortless. I can insert my custom XP CD into my drive, do a quick format, and have a fresh XP install with all drivers, service packs and custom settings in place 9 minutes later. (Yes, nine minutes)

Depending on what your settings are, changing NB settings, PCI-E speed and voltages can result in broken stripes. You also invite greater system instability, causing more crashes and compounding the problem. Yeah you can troubleshoot and work out the problems, or you can reinstall in a few minutes and try again from scratch.

im running server 2008 at my school. the only problem is that some programs dont install on servers and that it is ment for servers.

also it is only a 60 day i thought

Alexyu, I edited your original post. If you want to help others get the trial working, that's fine with me. Though, after 240 days (if you choose to re-arm the OS three times), the product key will be invalid and a reinstall probably won't work (reactivate).

Well, that guy who wrote the article said something like "so now you have a better than vista os for free. the only thing is that you have to reinstall it every 8 months. And this is easy, isnt it?"

but i still think that vista is beter then this. for one drivers. many computers dont give out drivers for this and also the security features are WAY too tight. they are nice for a server where you cant get a virus but for a user it is imposable.

i mean you can do the same with vista. get the 30 day trial and extend it 3 times (i think) thats only 3 months but imho i think it is worth buying vista and sticking with it.

I have to install windows every like 6 months, and not because it expires, but after half an year-an year you have to reinstall it because problems may occur, or you just want to make it work faster. I recently reinstalled it after about a half an year since last time. No matter what version I'm using (xp, vista, 98 etc), but it always happens.
