Just one question

it means whatever you are connecting to is making sure your computer is allowed to connect. a MAC address is a unique indentification on all network devices.
 
Does that mean other people can steal your signal or do you actually mean that they could tap into your connection and use the Internet as if they were you?
 
Well... they can't steal your signal, and by steal I mean take it away from you. They are just using your internet connection. They cant impersonate you, so they wouldn't use the internet as if they were you, but they could use it. For example, when I connect to my wireless router at home i get the IP 192.168.1.4 usually. If someone else were to connect they'd probably get 192.168.1.5 assuming I was connected to the internet at the same time.

They'd then have access to the internet just as I would.
 
By the way, Mac Address stands for Machine Address. Every machine has such an address and it is unique to this machine! It's normally a hexadecimal address! meaning it's a numbering system up to 15, only after number 9 it goes A, B, C etc...

MAC address filtering is not the best method of protection. I would make sure you have some sort of encryption on your wireless, and I recommend WPA, but in all honesty WEP will suffice for most cases.
