i wanted to use my brothers old dell inspiron 1720 but when ever i take it off charge it will still work for another 5 minutes it will just turn off. it has nothing to do with the battery as you can just keep turning it on when it is still of the battery and it will last for another 5 minutes or so. i was wondering if anyone has herd of this problem before with this model. i cant remember where but i read that changing the motherboard would fix the problem, the problem with this (if it is a solution) is i am not spending the sort of money to by a new mother board for something that i will basically use for downloading.

It could be getting hot and turning off, thats always the first thing i check when this problem comes up. Sometimes dust can make fans not function properly and heatsinks clog up. Could be a number of things but thats what I always check first, the CPU temp

Most likely its overheating. Take a can of compressed air and blow out the vents, keeping the can upright of course. Also, make sure you aren't keeping it on a bed or something so that it blocks the ports that let hot air out.

hmm good point. and it keeps turning on after it shuts off? might need a new battery, even though it seems to hold a charge and keep turning on

Could be heat, could be bad battery. Check temps first. Did you always keep it plugged when using it?

No it doesn't keep turning on, it was a new battery as my brother had the same problem with the last one. and I will check the temps tommorow

No it doesn't keep turning on, the batter has only been used for a week and my brother got it because of this problem so I would doubt its the battery, when I get home I will check the temp will be posted tomorrow about the same time

it isnt over heating, when i left of of charge doing nothing it stayed around 50 degrees. i tryed the battery reset and nothing changed. how can you tell if it is set to shut down in left idle? and it will shut down een if i am using it.
