hi guys got this desktop im going to boost up the ram abit, im just wondering is it better to keep windows xp on it ( which is a sweet operating sytem !) or put vista on it?

cheers

If it's gonna be more than 4GB of RAM and it's a newer computer, skip Vista and put 7 on it.

its not new but a good computer, its guna have 4gb of ram init and its got a 1.8ghz processor, i got windows 7 on my laptop and i do really like it.

if i upgrade from win xp am i going to be loosing speed i.e will windows vista be more resourceful than say windows xp with 4gb ram.

cheers

I would still put windows 7 on it strictly for the purpose of it running a current good OS. You'll lose a little quickness but will be much happier with 7 I think.

Vista is a terrible operating system, it's very unstable and it will probably make your computer way slower. The only reason why I would upgrade from xp to vista (If win 7 didn't exist cause now that it does it is the better way to go than vista) is if I'm a gamer. Xp only supports up to directx 9, vista supports up to dx 11 which means you can play all modern games.

Honestly does not matter if you have 4 GB of RAM, Anyone with 2.5 GB or more with a 64 Bit CPU should go the route of 64 Bit OS, What is your CPU? Vista did suck, but today with service packs is almost on par with Windows 7, but if your paying for the OS then you should go 7. If Vista is free then go Vista just make sure you do all necessary updates.

If you've got a 64-bit CPU, then get Windows 7 x64 or Windows 8.1 x64 instead of Vista so that you can use all of your RAM.

If you've got a 32-bit CPU (which it likely is since it's an older PC we are talking about here), then get Windows 7 x86 or Windows 8.1 x86 instead of Vista. With a 32-bit OS, you'll only be using about 3.5GB of your 4GB, but if you've only got a 32-bit CPU, then you'll never be able to use all 4GB anyway.

Basically, it's time to get rid of XP and forget about Vista. Vista is getting old now anyway and in the past year or so I've been getting family members off Vista (and XP) and onto 7.

DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS 8.1 ON ANY MACHINE RUNNING XP PERIOD, MS has dropped support for a lot of XP hardware and people who have older Windows 7 machines are having a hard time with the update. MS did something similar to Windows 8.1 as they did with Vista by doing a large update to the part of the OS that handle the drivers. Much needed but causes a lot of breaks with older hardware.

Really? I've got 8.1 working perfectly on a PC which was originally designed for XP and came out in 2009, possibly before Windows 7 was even released. Upgrading it from 8 to 8.1 through the Windows Store was easy enough and I've not had any problems concerning drivers with it.

It goes without saying though, check driver support before you upgrade the OS. It might be that XP is the last supported OS if the hardware is really old. 9 times out of 10, Vista drivers will work with 7 and 8.

An indication as to how old this hardware is would be good in helping to determine if a newer OS would work for you or not.

You are one of a few who are this lucky, I would not advise and why risk it when Windows 7 is supported until 2020.
