Keeping my PC in perfect condition?

Hi,

I just ordered a new PC and I want to know everything i'd need to know to keep it working pretty much perfectly.

I mean completely no viruses, what not to go on etc.

I want to download films and music with it but dont want my pc to et messed up.

Tell me everything i should get, use etc and any tips.

Iwould like to know the ultimate combo of virus protection software, firewalls etc so my pc is perfect and also how to download films without risking damaging my OS or PC.

get AVG or Avast (Free virus scanners, do a google search).
You will need a firewall, and maybe a Spyware scanner (Spybot Search And Destroy for an example). If you are downloading, just watch out for .exe files.
And downloading copyrighted films/music is illegal and not allowed on this forum.

Depends on the music and films. There are now companies that if you pay 10 bucks a month you can download music and dvd's legally!!! There are 2 of them advertising on tv daily here where i live. Its just like renting them in the store accept you own it for 10 dollars a month unlimited downloads!
 
Get yourself a copy of Deep Freeze. While you still can get viruses, spyware, and everything like that, it doesn't matter because after you reset your machine, it's right back to how it was when you loaded the software. However, you can't save anything to the machine or install software while it's frozen. To "thaw" the computer, you have to tell the software to do so, then reboot. A bit of a pain, but it sure works.

He said "Completely no viruses" so I would suggest you get NOD32, its simply THE BEST.
 
Your never gonna be able to keep your computer with absolutely no viruses. Virus protecting just can't update soon enough. I would say go mac if you want absolutely no viruses, but there are even some out there with the recent gain if popularity for macs. But 1 or 2 are bound to get through soon enough.
 
Now days there are thousands of viruses and spyware, and keeping your computer clean from that can seem overwhelming. I have made a list of anti-virus/spyware programs that can help keep your computer un-infected.

First, i would get Firefox. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ Firefox is a great browser that help keeps spyware and viruses from getting to your computer in the first place.

AntiVirus:
AVGhttp://www.grisoft.com/doc/1 AVG is a good anti-virus that doesnt use a ton of computer resources. They have a free version, and a pro version and both work great.
Nod32http://www.eset.com/ Nod32 is my favorite anti-virus. It uses very little computer resources and is very good at detecting and deleting viruses.

Anti-Spyware:
These Anti-spyware work very well with eachother
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/Adware SE cleans off a lot of annoying spyware that causes pop ups etc.
http://www.safer-networking.org/ Spy-Bot SD is also a very good anti-spyware. It detects and deletes the more dangerous spyware/adware.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Spyware Blaster helps keep your computer clean by protecting your computer from known spyware/adware.

Anti-Malware:
http://www.ewido.net/en/Ewido is another great anti-malware program that detects and deletes malware from your computer.

Firewalls
http://www.zonealarm.com/ Zone alarm is a great firewall that helps keeps hackers and other intruders from entering your computer.

Other Suggestions
Routers help a lot by protecting your computer from hackers and other intruders. Routers have built in firewalls that keep your computer safe.

Viewing the wrong websites can infect your computer, such as porn sites and torrent sites.

For anti virus, I'd go with NOD32, used it myself and it is absolutely brilliant. For a firewall I'd use Sygate, configure it correctly and you will be quite safe, configure it wrong and you'll end up blocking yourself out. Spybot S&D and Adware are both good when used together. Defragment from time to time also and clean up your registry on the odd ocassion too.
 
Every computer at my school uses deep freeze.


Its a pain. :-/ Cant save anything to the hard drive, any program installed is removed when the computer is shut down.

Haha, yuep. I even reinstalled windows and guess what happened when i rebooted, my old OS was still there! You have to totally reformat your hard drive for it to go away. Brilliant program though.
