keeps going back to PIO mode

I have an Asus E-616 DVD-ROM, and a sony DRU-710a DVD-RW...
i've been having trouble with the computer freezing when either of them try to auto play a cd, and i've recently discovered through the properties for my IDE controller (in device manager) that the transfer mode for both of them is downgraded due to excessive transfer errors... It tells me to use an 80 conductor flat ribbon cable, which i am... a new one that came with the motherboard.
Whats going on??
i dont want PIO mode, its too slow!

what happens when you use each drive on its own? do you still get this problem? also if it happens when different devices are connected to the IDE channel in question you may have a problem with your IDE controller on the motherboard

umm... haven't tried one drive at a time yet... i'll have a go later today (gotta go to uni soon)

Have you checked the jumper settings on the rear of the drives? What are they set at and what else is on each IDE channel?

The other items you seem to have well in hand - BIOS and correct cable (assuming only 2 devices per IDE channel!).

As well as DMA enabled in BIOS per StrangleHold, you also have to select "UDMA if available" in Device Manager/IDE Controllers for each device.

both are on the same IDE channel, on Cable Select.
The only options in bios for UDMA are "auto" and "disable", and for PIO the options are "auto", "mode 0", "mode 1" etc...

so what do i do? I'll try them on their own , and with one on each IDE channel and get back yo you soon

i just put them on separate IDE channels, and theyr staying on UDMA now... so i dont know whats going on, but its working now

ok, set one as master and the other as cable select. ive had 2 drives set to CS before and thats caused me problems

I've got both mine on the same IDE channel. Most people split them. I set mine as Master and Slave. Then I know exactly which is doing what.
