I am new and have a problem. I have been told by a friend that my husband installed a key logger on my laptop. She says it's a script that logs the keystrokes and then saves them as a .txt log on my husband's computer. How does a logger work and how can I detect it on my machine so I can remove it?

I'm not sure you can really detect it because I used to have one installed on my computer by some virus and I ended up reinstalling windows. Basically, lie you said, every keystroke that you make, the program saves it on its "host" computer and then that person can view what you have pressed throughout the day. The keylogger is hidden so you won't really have a chance in seeing it.

*sigh* it can't be found? that is not encouraging. He is the one who reloads my computer so he would just put it on again.........

Unless your husband is computer savvy enough to write his own key logger then he most likely used a third party product. However, those are typically hard to get rid of unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

Like already mentioned the best way to be sure is a wipe and reload. I think you need to have a chat with him about some trust issues over anything else though.

A program called Webroot Spy sweeper usually finds the key loggers and knocks them out. download the software for 30 days and try it out.

Untill the issues settle down, u can use windows onscreen keyboard.
Start->programs->accessories->accessiblity->On screen keyboard.
Key logger only record keystrokes, not mouse clicks.

Some of those third party products require a password to remove. Not sure if webroot can get rid of those that easily. Can't say that I have tried either though.
