Key Mapping USB controller

I've got some hardware I bought from desktopaviator.com which allows extra button to be added for use in games. It appears as a 'game controller' and in games you can then map funtions to it.* But I'd like to use it now to map other function like open an application, insert a special character in word, open a bookmarked webpage.

Does anyone know of some software (free ideally!) that will allow me to map this.

Thanks, ask for more info!

*the hardware works by giving you a series of pins that switches can be connected across, then the switch closes it shows as a button press

p.s I've tried 'hot keyboard pro' already but it doesn't detect USB devices

Well ideally it would be best if the game controller came with software to map the buttons but I take it doesn't since you're looking for some.

No it didn't because most games have key mapping built into their 'options' pages so these changes would only apply to the game. I was looking to map these buttons so that they do whatever no matter what software is open.

Thanks for that, it's one awesome piece of software! As far as I can see it does everything I want, I'll defiantly be buying it :D
Cheers again
