Hi folks,

Any help????

PS he has lots his windows discs so i cant even try that.

Found at http://www.siliconguide.com/qa/forum/messages/340.shtml, hope it helps:
Figured out how to fix this error if anyone is interested.

It is a bad Upperfilter setting in the registry.

To repair this error:

1) go to C:\Windows\System32\Regedit32.exe

2) Click on Edit -> Find

3) Type in kbdclass (be inventive here as I know you cant type. Copy this name from c:\windows\system32\drivers\kbdclass.sys - right click and click rename. Then just copy the 'kbdclass' - this can then be pasted in the regedit box)

4) Search through for as many Upperfilters you can find.

5) They most likely have 2 lots of drivers associated with it eg 'tphclhs kbdclass'

6) Double click the 'Upperfilter' and delete the other entry except 'kbdclass'

7) Search for all instances of this and change them

8) Go to device manager and uninstall your keyboard - then 'scan for hardware changes'

9) You will most likely need to restart

Keyboard should now be working fine.

I actually surprised myself in solving the error - as you normally delete the upper and lower filters for CD-Roms when they have the error code 39 - so I guess it would work for all devices that have upperfilters.

Worked for me so hope it works for you too.

Best of luck

Bas

Post his HijackThis log as well, and we'll remove any malware that's present.

I will try the keyboard fix the now

what is a upperfilter? i can find loads of enteries but dont know whast to delete

UpperFilters are talking about registry entries with UpperFilters as the name. If you keep searching through the registry for kbdclass (just click Edit -> Find Next to find the next matching entry), you should come across a few with UpperFilters as the name.

Please run HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.

Place a check next to the following entries:
  • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Please close all open windows except for HijackThis and choose Fix checked

Please delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\smvalid.exe

Please reboot and post a new HijackThis log. How is your system running now?

His computer is running a tad slow but i cannot connect it to the internet as its at my house to see how it really runs. His internet is was really bad as in website have no graphics or any shape to them just words.

I could not find the smvalid file but i cant use the keyboard yet.

I also deleted some aol files as they are from a demo he installed.

are 04 files start up entries?

Update,

I have now deleted most of the upperfilters 3 of them where "unable to be deleted" however the device manager etc says the keyboard is functioning normally however its not working at all.

Your logfile appears to be clean, but please do the following:
Please click on Start -> Run. Copy/paste the following command and click OK:
cmd /c del C:\WINDOWS\system32\smvalid.exe

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Updating Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it:
    javaicon.gif

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

There was nothing in the logfile that would explain those Internet problems, make sure that the viewing of images is enabled. In Internet Explorer you can do this by clicking on Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced. Under Multimedia ensure that Show pictures is checked.

O4 entries are indeed Startup items, and if there are any programs you don't wish to run on startup, you can check them in HijackThis and choose Fix checked (make sure you know what you're disabling).

As for the keyboard problem, I'd try uninstalling it in Device Manager, rebooting the computer and allowing it to be re-detected. I'd also try a different keyboard to eliminate that as a possibility, if you haven't already. If you have your own Windows CD and it's the same version as your friend's (e.g. both XP Home or both XP Pro), you can use your CD to do a Repair Reinstall of Windows, provided you use his CD Key when prompted (assuming he hasn't lost the CD key as well).

i have tried plugging in my computer's keyboard & its coming up with keyboard error 10.

Is there software i could download to fix keyboard errors cause i may have deleted a kdbclass reg by accident through mis reading instructions?

No, I don't believe so. I'd try a System Restore to some point before he started having problems. There's a good chance that that will fix the problem.

His system restore is faulty it comes up failed when i go back to his earliest SR. If i use a windows disc to repair it what do i need to type "C:\windows\" then it gives a big list but i dont know what one to choose

Cheers

In order to do a Repair Reinstall, you will need to boot off the Windows CD. Insert it into your CD-ROM drive when you boot your system, and ensure that the CD-ROM is the first boot device in the BIOS. After accepting the licence agreement, press r to repair and follow the prompts.
