Keyboard typing numbers

I have just purchased a new laptop Acer Aspire One.

It does not have a numerical keyboard but I have one connected to a usb port as I deal a lot with numbers.

Oddly when the separate numeric keyboard is on, some of the letters come up as numbers.

an example of this is when I type my surname Isaacs it comes out as 5saacs.

Is there a way to stop this from happening.

Would appreciate any help on this.

Does toggling Num Lock make a difference? I've seen a few laptops that lack the dedicated number pad, but will change your key input if Num Lock is activated.

It worked fine in my old Lenovo laptop

When I turn number lock on my numeric keypad, that is when the numbers appear when typing.
