ya, you arnt actually getting that high speed, but microsoft only shows 2 or 3 speeds, 54, 30 something, and maybe a 16.

Not true. I have seen a TON of different ones. My friend brought over his laptop which had a crappy reciever and he got a ton of different speeds.4, 5, 9, 12, 24 etc. I have a 54 mbps connection and I dont notice any difference than on my computer which is directly connected. I'm using wireless on my desktop in my room through a USB receiver. It's gotta be something like 20-30 feet away, down a story, and a couple walls away. I still get 54mbps and an "excellent" signal rating.

um, not much difference as long as wireless id good. Wired is better tho, by a little.

A little better? Man, with perfect conditions you'll get 54 Mbps max with wireless, cabled will go up to 1 Gbs! That's not a little difference, that's a 20x factor difference. (Approx)

If you are on a internet server then you won't notice a difference between wireless and wired as I doubt the entire route from you to the server and back will run above 54 mbps. However, if you happen to have the server in your room or on your local Intranet, then yes, running a 100+ mbps cable line will help significantly. I used to have a CS server in my room sitting next to my gaming box. There was a total of 2' of cable and a router seperating the two. Talk about some crazy ping times. Especially since this was pre windows XP and I was dual booting into 98 lite, so CS and the absolute minimum background services were the only things running. That was the life.

I've got cable on a 1Gb/s motherboard, hooked in wired. The MAX I have ever gotten was 4Mb/s, and it lasted about 2 seconds before it shot back down to 400Kb/s.
