Lag at the beginning of a game

I had a Fx 5200 and when some games would lag when I first started to play them then it would start to run fine. I decided to upgrade to a 6800 but this did not solve the problem.
I don’t think it’s the video card but it is a little annoying.

yea

tha exact same thing happens to me when I run Doom 3 on Ultra. It lags at first, but in about 3 minutes, its all caught up and I can play it just fine (30-45fps believe me or not i don't care). I have noticed that if you set the settings on low, then put them on the highest settings as soon as the game starts, the lag issue never occurs. My other specs are listed below.

It might be because when the game starts the video card has to load all the textures into its memory and once they are loaded the gfx card dosent have to wait for the textures anymore. It could also explain being able to turn it on low and then high to make it work because it would use the low textures until the high textures loaded.

That would explain it :D
I have no clue why its running at 1.81ghz, and don't plan to screw with it until it starts to lag in games. Maybe its running at 2.2, its just wat the bios said

If you start the game in low settings, then switch them, don't you need to restart the game to save the settings? I may be wrong, I only played Doom 3 once, and I don't remember it very well.

RAM can sometimes be a HUGE problem, I've just recently removed my second 256MB RAM slot to replace it with a 512 one and when I removed it I tried to play a game which I had OVER spec for. It lagged like hell.
RAM can be soooo annoying sometimes, glad I'm getting my 512 ram slot soon kicks it up to 768MB woohoo!

AMD Athlon 3300+ at 1.81 Ghz (no OCing)
NVIDIA FX 5500 256 mb
LOL considering you have a nonexistent processor aand you make a stupidly dumb claim.... factor in the fact that your video card is
- 2x1 pipe
- Clocked at 270/200
And the 6800NU is specd as
- 12x5 pipe
- Clocked at 300/350
And the 6800 cant even get 45fps .... translates loosely to you talkin smack. Sorry. It's just reality.

this happened when i had a 16MB card the whole game with CS CZ then i switched my 2 PC's so i had a 32MB it would do it at the begging and then on big level's, and now i just totally upgraded and its fine.

I said you guys wouldn't believe me, maybe HP sent me a 6800Ultra instead without meaning to

2. The thread talks about why

fine then don't, i'll jsut stop making claims since you don't believe me anyway and enjoy the game, but don't pester me!
Well youd have a bit more credibility if you listed a processor that exists....

Well it's just that it's not possible for the card to do as I've seen some claim. Meanwhile the card has to be either a 6800Ultra or the FX 5500 ;-).

Honestly people we are not measured by our computers performance so there will be no bonus's handed out so lets keep it honest as it helps us help you.

You seem like (or try to convey at least) that you know something or another about computers, if so, its quite easy to verify if HP "messed up" without resorting to tactical ambiguity :) Just fire up hmm .... the videocard drivers or riva tuner or any benchmark program really....

Doom3 Runs default at 800X600 Not 1024X768 and that benchmark was with AA and uncompressed maps, this means that at default specs, those card would perform much better.

The problem is going to be RAM, the reason you can avoid the delay in Doom3 if you select low quality and then in game change it to High/ultra, Is because Doom3 requires you to exit the game before the changes can be made, So in reality you never load anything in high/ultra.

RAM is going to be the problem here, You use up every drop you have so you hard drives starts to page (Virtual ram on you HD at a wonderful 1/10 to 1/50 the speed of ram) So when it first is getting this ready, you system is slow.

Solution, Buy more ram.
