Lag at the beginning of a game

Actually memory doesnt play as much of a role in Doom3 as you'd think http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2156&p=2

Ok here is a diferent theory.

They have say a 512Mb system, full of crap, (40+ proceses), Now they have about 100Mb of free ram, Utter crap right, Well when you would play Doom3, windows moves everything To the HD in a cache file, this would only cuase a slowdown while you start the game, or when you ALT+Tab into desktop.

Quick way to test this out.

Get in game, wait for Doom3 to get normal, then Alt+tab out, do something simple like go to www.yahoo.com, then get back into the game, If slowdown happens again, RAM should be the problem.

People with clean system should have this problem a lot less.

Hehe I was being picky (attention to detail) -- im quite aware of the Newcastle256 processor you have but thats an Athlon64 :)

I know it shouldn't be able to run DOom 3 like that, and I was stunned as well. Maybe the benchmarking program was junk.
Perhaps, have you tried using the built in benchmark thing?

Yes but when I say "Doom3 doesnt require 2GB of RAM" I dont mean "Doom3 + half a dozen other processes doesnt require 2GB of RAM" :) (and im sure neither did Anandtech)

sigh

sigh, i forgot to put 64 there. oh, and I downloaded fraps and ran it. I'm getting more like 6-14 fps on Doom 3, which I for some reason find playable. I was right, that program was junk.

wat built in benchmark?

Unreal Tournament 2004 Lags at the beggining of the matches.. is it the same problem as Doom3? And Graphics are set at its highest, i dont know bout Anti-Ailising or Anistrophic filtering though

UT2K4 Lags at the beginning because it's finishing the model caching ... now if its constant lag that's a different story :) You cant really compare UT2K4 to Doom3 as their engines were built for different reasons and profiles

Ah its somewhat related (or ill assume it is until i wake up next time). You fix it by
1. Getting better hardware
2. Disabling the precaching of models (but that would make the rest of the game slow)

It is about lagging isnt it?

Sure :). I apolologize... I spoke... errr typed out of line ;). I just figured as this thread was started by another member that if you where looking for personal advice that you could start your own thread. Anyway sorry :).
